Abstract: IBM® Systems Director, an integral component of IBM’s Smarter Systems portfolio, provides systems management personnel with a single-point-of-control, helping reduce IT management complexity and cost. With IBM Systems Director, IT personnel are able to optimize compute and network resources, quickly respond to business requirements with greater delivery flexibility, and attain higher levels of services management with streamlined management of physical, virtual, storage, and network resources.
Shipped with every IBM System x® and BladeCenter® server, IBM Systems Director can be used to check the status and configuration of servers, as well as to monitor critical hardware and software parameters, including Microsoft® Windows® services. In addition, Systems Director can be configured to take automatic action when a monitored service stops functioning properly.
This document describes the steps involved in configuring an Event Automation Plan (EAP) in IBM Systems Director to monitor a Microsoft Windows service, generate an event when that service stops, and attempt to automatically restart the service. To illustrate this capability, we will use the Symantec AntiVirus service installed on a managed system running Windows XP Professional. The steps are exactly the same for any supported Windows operating system and any Windows service.
