Abstract: With the advent of WebSphere Application Server for z/OS V7, a new SMF record type was introduced -- SMF 120 Subtype 9. That SMF record provides better information with considerably lower processing overhead.

The SMF 120.9 record is like any other SMF record in that any utility programmed to understand the layout of the record can be used to analyze and understand the information contained in the records. Many of the common SMF analysis tools in the market have been updated to SMF 120.9.

A simpler tool that is available is the SMF Browser, a Java-based tool that provide relatively basic formatting and analysis of the SMF 120.9 records. That SMF Browser can be extended with custom-written "plugins" of your design.

This white paper provides background and instructions on writing SMF Browser plugins.

Dave Follis is the author of this material. He is the architect of the SMF 120.9 record and one of the key architects of the WAS z/OS product overall. His knowledge of the "inner workings" of WAS z/OS is extensive.
