Abstract: As demand for power and cooling within datacenters increases, more companies are looking for ways to reduce the amount of hardware required to run their business. Moving computing hardware to higher density, yet more manageable and robust architectures is playing a major part in server consolidation. To get the most out of limited datacenter floor space IBM provides the perfect solution; the IBM BladeCenter. The BladeCenter uses up to 50 percent less floor space and up to 35 percent less energy than competitor rack servers without sacrificing performance.

Virtualization is playing a key role in server consolidation. Virtualization is enabling companies to reduce the hardware required while retaining the systems needed for business processes. There are many virtualization options available, ranging from low-cost open-source to enterprise-class high-end solutions. This paper will cover a low-cost solution using Ubuntu Linux Server Edition 7.10 and VMware Server 1.05 on IBM BladeCenter servers.
