Abstract: In 1995, IBM introduced the 3590 series of tape drives. These drives were all capable of being equipped with an Automatic Cartridge Facility (ACF) or “Autoloader”. With the ability to hold up to 10 cartridges, these autoloaders provided customers with high-capacity, unattended operation of their tape drives without incurring the high cost of a library. When IBM introduced 3592 Model J1A and 3592 Model E05 (TS1120) Tape Drives, there was no Autoloader available.

In March 2007, IBM introduced the TS3400 Tape Library which has 18 cartridge slots and up to two TS1120 Tape Drives, however when first introduced, the library was not supported on System z.
This white paper describes the use of the TS3400 Tape Library to provide functions similar to 3590 Autoloaders in the System z environment. System z support of the TS3400 library became available August 31, 2007 via enhancements to the TS1120 Tape Controller Model C06.
