Abstract: Energy efficiency has long been a top priority at a large natural gas and electric utility headquartered in the United States. Many organizations around the globe are looking to reduce power consumption and many are even facing a data center power scarcity. This utility company, teaming with IBM, is currently undertaking a server consolidation of their data center with the explicit goal of greatly reducing power consumption and increasing their own energy efficiency.

This paper will highlight business and IT goals, discuss server consolidation and its advantages, outline original and target configurations, analyze estimated energy savings, and conclude with next steps for clients and IBM.
