Abstract: IMS data sharing allows multiple IMS systems to share databases with full update capability from all systems. IMS data sharing may be used to improve availability, increase capacity, and simplify applications. This presentation provides potential users with an explanation of data sharing and information on implementing it.

Part 1 is an overview which explains what IMS data sharing is and why it is used. It concludes with a short explanation of its implementation.

Part 2 has more details. There is an explanation of the functions used to provide integrity with data sharing. These functions are database authorizations, locking, buffer invalidations, and notifications. Considerations for configuring for availability are given. Lock processing and buffer invalidation processing are explained. Understanding these processes should provide insight into the factors affecting performance with data sharing.

Part 3 is a brief explanation of the implementation of block level data sharing. Information is provided for sizing the lock and cache structures used with data sharing. A list of related documentation is included.
