Abstract: With the growth of Linux on z/VM comes unique challenges that are unique to a virtual environment versus a physical server environment. Examples of some of the more common challenges of a virtual Linux environment will be shown and how OMEGAMON XE can assist in detecting and monitor for these unique situations. Skills sets are sometimes a challenge. Today, many z/OS system programmers have, by default, been selected as the new z/VM system programmers and/or Linux System Administrators. With their z/OS backgrounds, there is a desire to have some of the same monitoring and operational functions traditionally found in their z/OS environments. Often the Linux System Administrators are not on the same team as the z/VM system programmers. Finally, sizing decisions made during POCs or at the start of the early growth of the environment may no longer be appropriate as the system matures. The presentation will introduce some of the more common challenges and issues and show how OMEGAMON XE on z/VM and Linux as well as IBM Operations Manager for z/VM can help.
