Abstract: The primary topic and focus of this document will be on the Siebel “Production” upgrade flow and performance tuning techniques. This distinction is made because the Siebel upgrade flow and process used for the Development system, is not the same as that used for the Production upgrade. Specifically, the material in this document will cover performance considerations and techniques you can use to reduce the elapsed time and CPU cost, while minimizing the downtime and outage to your production environment, along with the impact of a fallback to the old Siebel database, if needed.

The basis for the Siebel on z/OS DB2 database upgrade architecture is a shared mid-tier (Windows or UNIX) and z/Series SQL and JCL process. The current Siebel upgrade versions that utilize this structural design are for Siebel 7.7 and 7.8. From a production standpoint, both upgrades are nearly identical in the process flow. For the 7.7 upgrade, a fixpack version of 7.7.2.4 or above is required, while for 7.8, you must be at a 7.8.2 upgrade software level.

Siebel does not support all of the same source environment upgrade paths for each of the two upgrade target environments (7.7 or 7.8). Siebel designates product functionality based on a separation between Horizontal and Vertical product lines. In simple terms, the Vertical products basically are an application stack and additional schema on top of the Horizontal model.
