FAQ: In IBM i 6 there is an option to enable encryption in the operating system. Does that offer the same functionality as hardware encryption?

Answer to this FAQ:

The new function in i V6R1 is software based encryption using BRMS. It is not the same as hardware encryption.
Advantages:
  • Use any time of tape drive
  • Mix and match encryption on one cartridge

Considerations:
  • Significant increase in CPU utilization
  • Significant Performance Degradation
  • May take up to 3X as much media
  • Certain system libraries can't be encrypted
  • i5/OS Encrypted Backup Enablement - 5761-SS1 opt 44 is also required
