In IBM i 6 there is an option to enable encryption in the operating system. Does that offer the same functionality as hardware encryption?
Answer to this FAQ:
The new function in i V6R1 is software based encryption using BRMS. It is not the same as hardware encryption.
Advantages:
Use any time of tape drive
Mix and match encryption on one cartridge
Considerations:
Significant increase in CPU utilization
Significant Performance Degradation
May take up to 3X as much media
Certain system libraries can't be encrypted
i5/OS Encrypted Backup Enablement - 5761-SS1 opt 44 is also required
