| Abstract: Advanced Print Utility (APU) is an iSeries program product, part of AFP PrintSuite for iSeries (product ID 5798-AF3). The APU program product has been withdrawn and is now available on an “as is” basis as a download. |
Description:
APU provides a document reformatting interface coupled with an output queue monitoring and processing subsystem. The formatting functions have been replaced with Infoprint Designer for iSeries (5733-ID1). The queue monitoring and processing subsystem has a number of interesting applications. You have the capability to automatically select, process and reroute print (spooled) files. Print files can be selected across any queue and by various fields found in the spooled file attributes (ie. job name, printer file name, user define fields, etc.). Most importantly, there are built-in exits at the beginning, middle or end of APU spooled file processing. Some examples where you could apply APU queue monitoring:
- Need to run a program to add some variable data to the spooled file.
- Need to run Override Print File (OVRPRTF) to add Infoprint Designer or Infoprint Server references but you don’t have access to the source job CL stream.
- Need to insert indexing into the spooled file using Create AFP Data (CRTAFPDTA) but you do not have access to the source job CL stream.
- Need to simply redirect certain spooled files based on attributes
Prerequisites:
None.
Installation instructions for APU library:
Follow these steps to save this package on your iSeries:
1) Do a binary download of the APU.SAVE file to your workstation into a directory of your choice.
2) Create a save file on your iSeries server system by using the following command:
CRTSAVF yourlib/APU
3) On your workstation, open a command prompt window and change to the directory containing the downloaded file.
4) FTP to your iSeries server system and put QAPU.SAVF the downloaded file into QAPUSAVE the save file by using the following commands:
ftp (iseries)
bin
put APU.SAVE yourlib/APU
quit
5) Verify the contents of the save file on the iSeries by using the following command:
DSPSAVF yourlib/APU
Now you are ready to install the APU product on your iSeries. You will need special authority (*SECADM and *ALLOBJ) to complete following steps.
6) RSTLIB SAVLIB(QAPU) DEV(*SAVF) SAVF(yourlib/APU)
The SETUP program creates a user profile (QYPUOWN), and changes ownership of some of the objects in the QAPU library. This step also builds a font database from the fonts that are resident on the system.
7) CALL PGM(QAPU/SETUP)
8) If the SETUP program completes successfully, you will see a message that says "QAPU - Install ok."
Now you are ready to use the APU product.
For instructions on the APU product, you should have a copy of the APU User's Guide (S544-5351). You can download the APU User's Guide from the IBM Publications Center at:
