Abstract: IBM is introducing an additional service testing environment called Consolidated Service Test (CST). The new testing is a result of IBM’s ongoing commitment to quality. The software maintenance strategy for the OS/390 and z/OS platforms will now reflect service that has been through CST testing. As a result, the Recommended Service Upgrade (RSU) process we know today will be changed. The change will affect which PTFs are identified as RSU, when they are assigned RSUyymm SOURCEIDs and the month used in the SOURCEID.

IBM is introducing an additional service testing environment called Consolidated Service Test (CST).
Consolidated Service Test (CST):
Today, many of the key product families on the OS/390 or z/OS software platform have different recommended maintenance strategies, with little or no coordination between them.

IBM established the Consolidated Service Test team consisting of cross product test representatives. CST enhances the way IBM tests and recommends maintenance packages for z/OS and OS/390 software, including the major subsystems. Each level of service will now go through additional testing in a customer-like sysplex environment, using industry representative workloads, for all of the following products:
  • z/OS or OS/390
  • CICS Transaction Server for OS/390
  • DB2 UDB for OS/390
  • IMS
  • MQSeries for OS/390
As the scope of CST expands, additional products will be added.

Note: This testing is in addition to any other individual PTF testing and does not replace any current testing performed by the products.

Recommended Service Upgrade (RSU) Redefined:
Based on this additional Consolidated Service Testing, IBM is redefining the Recommended Service Upgrade (RSU) for the z/OS and OS/390 platforms. Like the existing RSU process, recommendations will come out monthly in the form of SMP/E ++ASSIGN statements. For the products listed above being tested in the CST environment, the new recommended level of service will:
  • Have gone through a CST monthly test cycle prior to becoming recommended.
  • Be assigned an RSU SOURCEID that reflects when the service completed the test cycle and became recommended, NOT when the PTF closed. The PUTyymm SOURCEID will continue to be used to identify when a PTF closes.
  • Be based on a different criteria.
  • Each quarter all service (Severity 1, 2, 3 and 4 APARs) as of the end of the prior quarter will have completed a CST test cycle and will therefore become recommended.
  • In addition, each month HIPER PTFs, PTFs that resolve PE PTFs and other fixes as warranted that have completed a CST test cycle will become recommended.
  • While both the monthly and quarterly recommendations will use the same RSUyymm SOURCEID notation, you will be able to identify quarterly recommendations by their month values (e.g., RSUyy03, RSUyy06, RSUyy09 and RSUyy12).

The monthly RSUs are recommended for those customers whose preventive strategy requires more frequent maintenance updates. At any point in time, customers can get to the latest recommended level of service by using simple SMP/E constructs (for example, APPLY SOURCEID(RSU*)). For more information, visit the CST web site below. As always, customers should review HIPERs and PE Fixes on a regular basis and install those applicable to their environment.

The new CST recommendation is currently available from http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/zos/servicetst/getserv.html .

Deliverables:
The redefined RSU will be available 4Q2001 on ESO, CBPDO and ServerPac deliverables and orderable in SUF and ShopzSeries. With the transition to the redefined RSU, the availability of RSU0109 will be delayed until mid-November, and RSU0109 will be larger to include maintenance from prior PUT levels. Additional information will be provided with each of the deliverables, as well as on their corresponding web sites.

The CST web site at http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/zos/servicetst contains additional information. If there are any exceptions to the RSU recommendation, they will be documented in an exception report on this web site.

Disclaimer:
Please note the service recommendations are based on testing in IBM’s CST environment. Your environment and applications will differ, and therefore, your results may also.
