IBM® Rational® Developer for i for SOA Construction is a software package that includes three applications: IBM Rational Business Developer, IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems Software: RPG and COBOL Development Tools for i, and IBM Rational Host Access Transformation Services.

Rational Developer for i for SOA Construction enables you to build Web 2.0 applications and user interfaces that link to backend RPG, COBOL, and EGL business applications.

Rational Developer for i for SOA Construction helps you gain efficiencies that build competitive value.

  • Rational Business Developer—simplifies the development of web-based, cross-platform and service-oriented architecture (SOA) applications using the open source EGL.
  • Rational Developer for Power Systems Software™: RPG and COBOL Development Tools for i—provides an Eclipse-based, integrated development environment (IDE) for RPG and COBOL programmers.
  • Rational Host Access Transformation Services—enables the generation of a dynamic web interface from a 5250 data stream.

Rational Business Developer

  • Transforms EGL source into Java®, JavaScript or COBOL code optimized for deployment to a variety of application hosting environments, including Java EE servers and traditional transactional systems.
  • Provides built-in service constructs and service generation facility so business-oriented developers can create SOA-based applications without extensive training.
  • Enables deployment of applications and services to many platforms, including traditional environments, either as web services or natively.
  • Supports UML-to-EGL transformations to model complex applications graphically and to implement EGL services or full applications without manual coding.

Rational Developer for Power Systems Software: RPG and COBOL Development Tools for i

  • Provides an Eclipse workbench with integrated search, edit, analysis, build and debug capabilities.
  • Offers development tools for creating and enhancing RPG, COLBOL, CL and DDS-based applications on IBM i. Extends existing RPG and COBOL business applications to enable them for SOA.
  • Includes editing tools that allow the separation of business logic into reusable procedures that can be consumed as web services.

Rational Host Access Transformation Service

  • Provides a comprehensive set of options to transform the user interface and usability of 5250 green screen applications.

More information about any required Power Server PTFs can be found by:
  • Opening the Remote System Explorer perspective if it is not already open. The name of the current perspective is shown in the top left corner of the title bar for the Window.
    To open the Remote Systems Explorer perspective select Window > Open Perspective > Other and select Remote System Explorer from the list.
  • Creating a connection to your IBM i by expanding New Connection and double-clicking IBM i.
  • Expanding your new connection and right click IBM i Objects.
  • Selecting Verify Connection from the menu.
    This displays a dialog that shows which required PTFs are already installed on the systemand which ones are missing.
