Automates middleware environment build-outs, configuration management and application deployments
IBM® Rational® Automation Framework automates middleware environment build-outs, middleware administration, and deployment of application and related artifacts. This customizable, extensible framework supports IBM WebSphere® middleware, Oracle WebLogic Server and JBoss Application Server. Now you can reduce costs, automate complex administration and deployment tasks, and gain control over middleware environments.
Rational Automation Framework:
- Reduces operational costs by lowering the cost of deployment, maintenance, compliance and other expenses related to managing large, heterogeneous middleware.
- Increases productivity by automating manual, error-prone tasks. Rational Automation Framework allows teams to do more with fewer resources and complete their tasks in shorter timeframes.
- Improves application delivery by improving speed, consistency and quality so you can deliver applications using a consistent, accurate and repeatable process.
Reduces operational costs
- Eliminates the time and resources required to deploy and manage WebSphere environments, resulting in significant cost savings.
- Reduces the costs of compliance, disaster recovery and IT governance.
- Uses an agentless technology to communicate with WebSphere environments, allowing you to manage them from a central location.
- Provides a customizable framework, which supports your existing investment in tools and middleware management and deployment scripts. Rational Automation Framework actions can also be used.
Increases productivity
- Provides a multi-cell tool for WebSphere middleware environments, which delivers automation and consolidation capabilities to the WebSphere development, Q&A, staging and production administration functions.
- Allows administrators to easily set up new cells and environments, and apply patches, upgrades and interim fixes.
- Enables administrators to rapidly deploy applications, automate middleware configuration settings and gain visibility into environment changes.
- Facilitates team-based administration via an automation engine with enhanced performance and reliability.
Improves application delivery
- Provides a data-driven, centralized framework. This helps ensure the right data is associated with the right application in the right environment—each time, every time.
- Helps ensure that deployment process information is captured when artifacts are managed. This self-documentation feature enables various teams to use artifacts in the same manner.
- Keeps deployment artifacts separate from deployment processes. This promotes reuse and increases scalability.
- Connects to other software development processes to form a complete solution from development to deployment.

Java Requirements:
*IBM Rational Automation Framework includes the Java SDK V6 that it requires on the framework server and on target systems. The Rational Automation Framework web applications, rafservices and rafw, which include the Environment Generation wizard, are deployed on an application server that is supported by IBM Rational Build Forge. The supported application servers include IBM WebSphere® Application Server V6.1 (Java SDK V5) and WebSphere Application Server, V7.0 (Java SDK V6). Rational Automation Framework users can write custom actions, which can include Java or Jython code. The Java requirements for custom actions are as follows:

Processor:
Memory: Minimum 2 GB Disk space: Core product directories: The minimum space is 2 GB, which includes the space required for the provided Java software development kits (SDKs). Media tree directory: The space required for the media tree varies for each product installation. The disk space required is equivalent to the size of the installation media that you copy to the media directory. The media tree can be on the framework server or on a shared network drive. To estimate disk space requirements, include the space that is required by all products, product versions, and fix packs for each operating system that you plan to support. For help to determine space requirements, see IBM® WebSphere® product documentation. Environments directory: The minimum is 1 GB. The actual space that is required is affected by the following factors:
IBM Installation Manager: The minimum space is 5 GB for the logs, metadata, and installation files. Temporary directories: The minimum space is 1 GB for the logs, work, and user directories. To reclaim space, you can periodically delete the contents of the work and log directories. |
