• COBOL for AIX offers an ARCH compiler option. It lets you selectively target program code generation to either exploit POWER7 systems architecture or to be balanced among all supported IBM POWER® systems including POWER4, POWER5, POWER6® and POWER7.
• The ARCH option adjusts the generated instructions and the scheduling, and tunes the code to give the best performance for the specified architecture.

• A backend optimizer improves the performance of COBOL for AIX applications. This component is common among the IBM XL compilers such as XL C, XL C/C++, and XL Fortran.
