Deploy the WebSphere Application Server product edition that you want, when you want

IBM® WebSphere® Application Server Family Edition enables you to deploy the best edition for your needs—and enables you to change editions as your requirements change.

Uses Case 1 – Leading Bank

An IT Manager in a leading Bank has purchased WebSphere Application Server Family Edition and used the entitlements to deploy WebSphere Application Server to build a standard application. After a period of time, he decides to move this application into a clustered configuration for high availability using functionality available only in WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment.

Previously, this would have required a new purchase of WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment. With WebSphere Application Server Family Edition, he can just redeploy those entitlements as WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment, within the same license agreement and with no extra cost for migration.

In this case, every 4 PVUs of WebSphere Application Server can be redeployed as 1 PVU of WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment, so the purchase of additional capacity of WebSphere Application Server Family Edition might be necessary, depending on the capacity requirements.

Uses Case 2 – Large Enterprise

A large enterprise with a fairly big production environment is using WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment. The IT Architect decides to conduct a Proof of Concept for which she is looking for a lightweight server runtime such as WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core to manage smaller, web-centric workloads.

If she also has additional WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment entitlements that were deployed through WebSphere Application Server Family Edition, she can redeploy some of that excess capacity as WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core with no additional purchase.

In this case, every PVU of WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment can be redeployed as 8 PVUs of WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core.

To further show how WebSphere Application Server Family Edition entitlements work, refer to the table below.

Each row in this table is an example of a deployment of the bundled products that is compliant with the WebSphere Application Server Family Edition license when 1000 PVUs have been purchased.

Deployment Examples for 1000 PVUs of WebSphere Application Server Family Edition
  WebSphere Application
Server Network Deployment (1:1)
WebSphere Application
Server (4:1)
WebSphere Application
Server Liberty Core (8:1)
Compliant?
Example 1 1000     Yes (1:1, so 1000 / 1 = 1000 PVUs)
Example 2   4000   Yes (4:1, so 4000 / 4 = 1000 PVUs)
Example 3     8000 Yes (8:1, so 8000 / 8 = 1000 PVUs)
Example 4 500   4000 Yes (500 + [4000 / 8] = 1000 PVUs)
Example 5 200 700 5000 Yes (200 + [700 / 4] + [5000 / 8] = 1000 PVUs)
