Hierarchical storage manager automatically moves inactive data between storage tiers
IBM® Spectrum Protect™ for Space Management (formerly IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management) moves inactive data to reclaim online disk space for important active data. This Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) software extends your local disk space by automating the movement of seldom-used files to and from less expensive tiers of storage.
It allows you to wait to purchase additional disk storage and it frees your administrators and users from manual file system pruning tasks.
IBM Tivoli Spectrum Protect for Space Management:
- Contains pre-migration tools—they send a copy of the file to be migrated to the IBM Spectrum Protect server prior to migration, making storage space available and allowing for scheduled data transfer over the network.
- Allows you to predefine the stub file size—this feature eliminates the recall of the entire file for programs that only browse the first part of a file.
- Supports large file systems—when used with IBM Spectrum Scale or General Parallel File System (GPFS™), files managed by IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management can be moved from one storage pool (such as fast RAID) to another storage pool (such as slower SATA disks). The file path remains the same, including the file name, directory and file system name.
IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management supports UNIX environments: IBM AIX and Linux x86.
