Efficient storage for demanding requirements

IBM Cloud Object Storage System, is an on-premises solution for storing large pools of unstructured data designed for applications that require highly scalable, available, secure and cost-efficient storage. This storage offers a great solution for active archive, distributed file services, a content repository for unstructured data including images, video, and voice, backup and recovery target, analytics and IoT data lake along with other cloud native applications.

Our software defined storage provides the ability to deploy object storage on industry standard hardware platforms from top server vendors or a fully supported appliance from IBM.

By combining our storage economics and the ability to lock down data using Write-Once-Read-Many (WORM) storage, our solution is fast becoming the choice for many industries like finance, healthcare and government that have compliance or other data retention requirements.

Start with as few as three commodity X86 server nodes or as little as 72TB of useable storage and grow to petabytes or beyond. Your data always remains accessible, protected and online.

Flexible configurations

Each customer's situation and requirements are unique. In IBM Cloud Object Storage on-prem system can be deployed in three different top-level configurations:

  • Single-site
  • Vault mirror at two locations: maintains data availability even when only one location is online
  • Geo-dispersed across three or more locations: protects data from location-level outages without multiple copies

These deployment options are implemented at the storage pool level: one dsNet system with multiple storage pools could support more than one of these options simultaneously. This flexibility means that a dsNet system can be configured to deliver scale, manageability, always-on operation and efficiency for a wide range of different circumstances.

With a dsNet system, any number of locations from one location to many is supported. All that is required is a public or private network connection linking them together. This is possible because we have made building a secure product a priority from the beginning.

Software defined and hardware-aware

Deploy an IBM Cloud Object Storage platform on either IBM hardware or qualified third-party hardware in your data center, and run the software on industry-standard x86 servers. Designed with a shared-nothing architecture to allow virtually unlimited scalability, the system supports strong data consistency for its access across multiple time zones. Distributed erasure coding helps ensure data is always available, even when multiple drives, nodes, networks or sites have failed. Fully manage physical and logical components of the entire system through a browser-based single pane of glass or a comprehensive API-based management system.

Unmatched flexibility

Deploy object storage services for both traditional and born-on-cloud applications and services, thanks to support for both file and object storage workloads. Employ a rich set of RESTful APIs to program data for access using compatible S3 API or other compatible interfaces including Network File System (NFS) and Server Message Block (SMB) protocol through a gateway.

Massive scalability

Start with as little as 72TB but grow online to petabytes or even exabyte scale. Enjoy virtually unlimited capacity with no centralized metadata management process and no limit to metadata size and number of attributes. All metadata is treated the same as data, in that it is uniquely addressed and erasure coded for protection. Never run out of object namespace and capacity to store the objects or their metadata.

Powerful simplicity

Easily manage hundreds of petabytes or more with a small staff. A robust management GUI allows you to easily provision, monitor, troubleshoot and secure the storage system with minimal intervention. Integrate with other management systems or preferred tools using comprehensive API-based management capabilities. Easily collect extensive metrics on system health and performance, and present that data to clients in easy-to-navigate graphs and tables.

Built-in efficiency

Achieve high efficiency at cloud scale with up to 70 percent reduced total cost of ownership (TCO) when compared to traditional storage.1 Take advantage of built-in reports and interactive charts that help ensure the system is operating at optimal efficiency.

IBM Cloud Storage

Highly secure

Protect data at rest using automatic AES-256 encryption and SHA-256 hash. Secure data in motion using built-in TLS/SSL or SNMPv3 with AES encryption. Generate and manage credentials for each user access and apply digital certificates to protect all network connections against rogue attacks.

Compliant storage

Utilize Write-Once-Read-Many (WORM) storage with retention periods to lock down data for a specified period of time. One or many compliance-enabled vaults that define a default retention policy can easily be configured using the graphical user interface. Users or applications can define retention periods for individual objects using the compliance retention API. During a retention period there is no way to delete or modify an object even with full administrative access. This capability allows a company to create data vaults designed to protect data from deletion or modification as required to comply with regulations like SEC Rule 17a-4(f)
