IBM® CICS® Explorer provides a common, intuitive, Eclipse-based rich client platform (RCP) for architects, developers, programmers, and administrators (all IT roles who work with CICS).

CICS Explorer integrates the visibility and control of the CICS runtime and its resource definitions within a single, consistent user interface. A wide range of IBM CICS and Problem Determination tools can be installed into the CICS Explorer from the IBM web-based repository.

This helps both novice and experienced CICS users get more from CICS, and accelerates the transfer of knowledge, skills and best practice to the next generation

The CICS Explorer plug-in can also be installed in other RCPs including IBM Problem Determination Tools Studio, IMS Enterprise Suite Explorer for Development, IBM Data Studio, and Rational Developer for System z, giving their users a consistent experience, regardless of platform.

CICS Explorer features include:

  • Lightweight, powerful, and extensible framework with a small disk footprint and quick start-up
  • Ability to define, install, and manipulate CICS runtime resources and their definitions including Events, Atom feeds, Policies, Applications, Platforms, and Dynamic Web Bundle Projects
  • Powerful task-oriented views, context-sensitive resource editors, and wizards provide integrated access to a broad range of CICS and z/OS data and control capabilities
  • Flexible deployment with support for CICSPlex® SM repository and CICS System Definition (CSD) files
  • The z/OS Explorer – a common connection management and single sign-on component, to simplify access to z/OS-based sub-systems, and an intuitive and secure way to view, edit, and manage z/OS datasets and zFS files, submit JCL, and view JES output and job logs

CICS Explorer V5.1

The links below identify the supported components of CICS Explorer from which you can select system requirements in different levels and organization of detail.

The detailed system requirements information are the complete lists of hardware requirements, supported operating systems, prerequisites and optional supported software, with component-level details and operating system restrictions.

If you are installing the CICS Explorer SDK, the following versions of software are required:


  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.7.

  • Eclipse platform version 3.6.2 or 3.7.2.

  • You will also need any required 32-bit native libraries if you are running a 64-bit system.

  • CICS TS V4 APAR PM08661 is required to use the new JVM server Disable actions: PHASEOUT, PURGE, FORCEPURGE, and KILL.
