IBM® WebSphere® Application Server - Express provides a lower-cost, ready-to-use platform for building and managing websites and applications. This software is designed for a single server, with a maximum of 480 processor value units. It is limited to a 32-bit application server implementation.

WebSphere Application Server - Express helps you:

  • Increase developer productivity with open standards and broad programming model support, including lightweight options for web deployments.
  • Deploy and manage applications rapidly through a one-step installation process of adding or removing them from a monitored directory.
  • Administer multiple stand-alone application server nodes using the interface of a single shared administrative agent to which they are registered.

Increase developer productivity

  • Includes the Liberty profile that delivers fast restart time and is small in size for building applications that do not require the full Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) environment.
  • Supports IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition V7.0 as an optional pluggable JDK. Java 6 EE is installed with the product and used by default.
  • Provides Java EE support and certification.
  • Offers a simple programming model for constructing applications based on a service-oriented architecture (SOA), and lets you migrate applications from non-IBM servers such as Tomcat, JBoss and Oracle.
  • Supports Java batch, Web 2.0, Web Mobile, XML, Service Component Architecture (SCA) and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) programming models.

  • Helps ensure fast and smooth start-up with single-step installation and configuration.
  • Provides wizards, scripts and sample code.
  • Offers centralized administration, available through the job manager feature of IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment.

Installation Manager

You will be prompted to download and install IBM Installation Manager. The installation sets a preference to connect to an IBM-hosted remote repository that contains the product code. After you have Installation Manager running, use your IBM ID and password to authenticate with the IBM repository and you will then be able to install the product and selected fixes.

Download Director or HTTP

Use Download Director or HTTP to download IBM Installation Manager and product repositories archives to create local repositories. After the download is complete, install IBM Installation Manager. Next, unpack each of the product repository archives to a common directory path. Start IBM Installation Manager and go to the Repository preferences to add paths to each of the unpacked product repository locations. Finally, select the Install option to install product.
