IBM Rational Developer for zEnterprise is a unified development tool for application development on z/OS, CICS, IMS, IBM DB2, IBM WebSphere Application Server, and Power Systems. Rational Developer for zEnterprise lets you develop mainframe applications, including traditional COBOL, PL/I, C/C++, EGL, Assembler, and Java applications, web services, and XML-based interfaces linking to the web across hardware platforms, such as System z, Linux for System z, Power, and x86.

  • z/OS application development: Provides tools for z/OS applications; AIX applications; and Linux for System z, x86 Linux Servers, and z/OS UNIX file systems.
  • Web services: Facilitates shorter development cycles by reusing and transforming existing applications, making them accessible as web services.
  • CICS and IMS support: Enables you to create composite processing that integrates traditional mainframe CICS or IMS transactional applications and WebSphere–based environments.
  • Integrations: Integrates with other software to provide source code control.
  • Web development: Includes tools for creating cross-platform web services, transactional processing, Web 2.0 applications, lightweight Web 2.0 applications using EGL, and JavaEE applications on WebSphere Application Server.

z/OS application development

  • You can access IBM z/OS datasets, z/OS UNIX Hierarchical File System (HFS), System z File System (zFS) files, AIX files, and Linux files on multiple hardware platforms.
  • You can submit z/OS jobs; monitor z/OS job execution queues, and debug artifacts after access.
  • Rational Developer for zEnterprise includes a visually configurable editor, statement assisted creation, and verification of syntax for COBOL, PL/I, C, C++, High-Level Assembler, and Java languages.

CICS and IMS support

  • The Service Flow feature lets you develop a web service that collects and processes data from multiple sources, such as programs, screens, databases, and web service invokable processing.
  • Rational Developer for zEnterprise provides tooling to assist in modeling, generating, configuring, and deploying the components to the CICS V4.1 environment.

Web services

  • Rational Developer for zEnterprise offers Enterprise Service Tools, an integrated perspective that helps you create a CICS web service, an IMS SOAP gateway web service, and a web service that is not runtime specific.
  • You can create, view, edit, and validate WSDL, document-type definitions (DTD), and XML schemas and transform XML documents into text, HTML, or other XML document types.
  • Rational Developer for zEnterprise integrates relational databases and XML.

Integrations

  • Rational Developer for zEnterprise integrates with IBM Rational Team Concert™ for System z, IBM Rational ClearCase®, IBM Software Configuration and Library Management (SCLM) Toolkit, and CA Endevor Software Change Manager.
  • You can access customized JCL or TSO commands from the workstation to use existing System z tools on the mainframe.
  • You can integrate with IBM Rational Host Access Transformation Services, IBM Debug Tool, IBM File Manager, and IBM Fault Analyzer.

Web development

  • Visual layout tools help you write Java Server Faces (JSF), JavaServer Pages (JSP), EGL Web UI, EGL Rich UI, and HTML.
  • Rational Developer for zEnterprise includes a wizard to develop servlet and page handler code and includes graphic design software for producing static and animated output.
  • You can create web applications from database queries and beans.
  • This software supports J2EE coding and deployment.

Note:
1. Creating Windows COBOL or PL/I binaries using Developer for zEnterprise
compilers is not supported in Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Linux.
Please use another supported operating system in order to take advantage of
this functionality. This functionality is only available in Developer for
zEnterprise.
2. Developer for System z language support is dependent on the previously listed
operating systems having the base language support.
3. Developer for System z was developed for use with Eclipse IDE version 3.6.2
that uses at least version 1.6 of the IBM Java Development Kit (JDK). You can
only extend an existing Eclipse IDE that meets these requirements.
