System requirements
The following list contains the client system requirements for a formally supported Lotus Symphony release:
- Supported Windows® platforms: Windows XP + SP2, Windows Vista
- Supported Linux platforms: SLED 10 + SP1, RHEL 5.1
- At least 750MB of free disk space on Linux and at least 540MB of free disk space on Windows
- At least 512MB RAM memory
Note: Windows installer does not support AMD64 CPU with XP/Vista 64 bit platforms installed.
Before You Install
- It is recommended that you save the installer to a new directory, for example, C:\Symphony_Install on Windows or /root/Symphony_Install on Linux. If you do not download the installer to a new directory, you should move or copy the file to a new directory once the download is complete. Your Windows temp directory and the directory from which you launch Lotus Symphony installation cannot contain non-ASCII characters or any of the following characters: ";|*?!#&$',=^@%

It is highly recommended that you uninstall any previous version before installation to avoid potential conflicts.
- You must uninstall Lotus Symphony before you switch to a different account on the same system to re-install Lotus Symphony.
To uninstall any previously installed version of IBM Lotus Symphony on Windows.
- Close IBM Lotus Symphony before uninstalling.
- Open the Control Panel by clicking Start -> Control Panel.
- Double-click Add or Remove programs.
- Select IBM Lotus Symphony, and click Remove.
Note: If uninstallation fails, refer to the Windows manual uninstallation instructions below.
To uninstall any previously installed versions of IBM Lotus Symphony on Linux.
- Login as the root user.
- Change to the <$INSTALLDIR/_uninst> folder, such as . /opt/ibm/lotus/Symphony/_uninst.
- Double-click the uninstaller.bin file to start uninstalling the software.
- Uninstaller.bin can also be run in silent mode or console mode (only for version 1).
- To run it in silent mode use the command ./uninstaller.bin -silent. To run it in console mode use the commad ./uninstall.bin -console and follow the screen instructions.
- Set the $HOME environment variable with the right value $HOME=/root in case user uses command to get root permission instead of logging in as root user directly. For example, use sudo -H ./uninstaller.bin -console.
Note: If uninstallation fails, refer to the Linux manual uninstallation instructions below.
Installing IBM Lotus Symphony on Linux SLED 10 and RHEL5
Preparation
- Login as the root user.
- Specify your local language setting. Click Computer > Control Center > System > Language in SLED 10 or System > Administration >Language in RHEL 5, if necessary. Then restart the system to enable the local language setting change. Lotus Symphony version 1 automatially switches to the native language version specified in this setting.
- Locate the IBM_Lotus_Symphony_Linux.bin file that you downloaded.
- Change the IBM_Lotus_Symphony_Linux.bin file property to runnable, if necessary.
- Make sure that the additional package standard C++ library libcstdc++.so.5 is installed.
Notes
- You need to perform either of the following actions before you can print the license page during installation:
- Install a correct driver for your local printer.
- Use your current Adobe® Postscript® printer and set the GhostScript pre-filtering as Convert to PS level 1 on the Advanced tab.
- You need to adjust Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) policies or disable SELinux temporarily before you can install Lotus Symphony on some Linux platforms with SELinux enabled. Otherwise, an error message Failed to find VM - aborting displays because the Java™ in InstallShield MultiPlatform uses a few libraries which do not have permission according to SELinux policies by default.
Installing in GUI mode
- Start the IBM_Lotus_Symphony_Linux.bin file to start the installation, and follow the screen instructions.
- Click Finish to complete the installation.
Installing in silent mode
- Open a terminal and change to the folder where IBM_Lotus_Symphony_Linux.bin is located.
Run command ./IBM_Lotus_Symphony_linux.bin -silent -V Property=Value
Properties are provided as below:
licenseAccepted="true/false"
Specifies whether to accept the license of this program or not. It is set to false by default, and must be set as true, or the installation quits.
fileTypeAssociations=0,1,2,3,...
Specifies which file type is associated with Lotus Symphony. It is set to 3 by default, and ODF and OpenOffice.org 1.1 are associated.
- 0 -- No file type is associated with Lotus Symphony
- 1 -- ODF file is associated with Lotus Symphony
- 2 -- OpenOffice.org 1.1 file is associated with Lotus Symphony
- 3 -- ODF and OpenOffice.org 1.1 are associated Lotus Symphony
To associate Lotus Symphony with multiple file types, add the options. For example, 3 (1+2) means it is associated with ODF and OpenOffice.org 1.1 files.
installLocation=< Folder >
Target folder of Lotus Symphony. By default, the value is /opt/ibm/lotus/Symphony.
launchSymphony="true/false"
Specifies whether to launch Lotus Symphony after installation. By default, the value is false.

If you have an ECM server installed, use the following three parameters to control the installation of the client.
- deviceManagementUserName="username"
- Specify user name on ECM server.
- deviceManagementUserPassword="password"
- Specify user password on ECM server.
- deviceManagementServerURL="URL"
- Specify the URL of ECM server, along with the protocol and port.
A sample command is like: ./IBM_Lotus_Symphony_linux.bin -silent -V licenseAccepted="true" -V fileTypeAssociations="15" -P installLocation="/opt/ibm/lotus/aaa" -V launchSymphony="true"

Installing in console mode
- Open a terminal and change to folder where IBM_Lotus_Symphony_Linux.bin is located.
- Run the command ./IBM_Lotus_Symphony_linux.bin -console and follow the screen instructions.
Set the environment variable with the value /root in case user uses command to get root permission instead of logging in as root user directly. For example, use sudo -H ./IBM_Lotus_Symphony_linux.bin -console -V licenseAccepted="true"
You are ready to begin working with IBM Lotus Symphony to create new documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. The installation program creates one shortcut icon for IBM Lotus Symphony located under Application -> Office on RHEL5, or Computer -> More Applications -> Office on SLED 10.
Installing IBM Lotus Symphony on Windows XP and Windows Vista
Note: On Windows Vista, you cannot install Lotus Symphony from a remote server.
Installing in GUI mode
- Specify your local language setting. Click Start > Control Panel > Region and Language Options, if necessary. Lotus Symphony version 1 automatically switches to the native language version specified in this setting.
- Locate the IBM_Lotus_Symphony_w32.exe file that you downloaded.
- Double-click the file to start the installation process.
- Follow the screen instructions to complete the installation. Click Finish when the installation process is complete.
Installing in silent mode
- Open a terminal and change to the folder where IBM_Lotus_Symphony_w32.exe is located.
- Run silent install command IBM_Lotus_Symphony_w32.exe /s /a /s /v/qn. Notes that two /s are needed and that there is no space between /v and /qn.
Properties are provided as below:

INSTALLDIR=< Install folder >
- Target installation folder, which is C:\%Program Files%\IBM\Lotus\Symphony\ by default.

LAUNCH=1,0
- Specifies whether or not to launch Lotus Symphony after installation. 1 means launch, 0 means do not launch. It is set to 0 by default.

FILETYPE=0,1,2,3...
- Specifies which file type is associated with Lotus Symphony. It is set to 3 by default, and ODF and OpenOffice.org 1.1 are associated.
- 0 -- No file type is associated with Lotus Symphony
- 1 -- ODF file is associated with Lotus Symphony
- 2 -- OpenOffice.org 1.1 file is associated with Lotus Symphony

- Specifies whether to record installation logs in file < logfile >, which is a MSI parameter.

A sample command line is like: IBM_Lotus_Symphony_w32.exe /s /a /s /v"/lv c:\installogs.txt INSTALLDIR=\"c:\My Program\Lotus\Symphony\" FILETYPE=1 LAUNCH=1 /qn" - the option after /v should use double quotes and use a slash(\) before other quotation marks which follows.
You are ready to begin working with IBM Lotus Symphony to create new documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. You have one icon for Lotus Symphony on your desktop, and one shortcut on the Start > All Programs menu.
Manual uninstallation instructions for Windows XP and Windows Vista
Try this manual uninstallation approach only when the normal uninstallation process fails.
- Close IBM Lotus Symphony if it is running.
- Use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove IBM Lotus Symphony. You can download the utility from the following location: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.
- If the utility does not find any versions of IBM Lotus Symphony, proceed with the standard installation.
- Delete the desktop icon and Start menu item.
- Delete the installation directory completely. If it is running, end the soffice.exe process from the Task Manager window, then remove the installation folder, for example, C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Symphony.
- Backup the registry and then manually remove the registry key HKCU\Software\IBM\Lotus\Expeditor\{6C72554F-78B1-4406-A037-364BAF7B4860}\xpdInstallLocation or HKLM\Software\IBM\Lotus\Expeditor\{6C72554F-78B1-4406-A037-364BAF7B4860}\xpdInstallLocation.
Manual uninstalling instructions for Linux SLED 10 and RHEL5
Try the manual uninstallation approach only when the normal uninstallation process fails.
- Login as the root user.
- Close IBM Lotus Symphony if it is running.
- Remove the installation directory, such as /opt/ibm/lotus/Symphony. End the soffice.bin process, if it is still running.
- Remove the registry file, /etc/lotus/Symphony.
- Remove the InstallShield install/uninstall data under /root/InstallShield/Universal/ibm/Symphony.
- Remove the workspace user data under /root/.lotus/symphony.
- Remove the shortcut files:
- /usr/share/applications/IBM Lotus Symphony.desktop
