What's Lotus Symphony 1.2.1 on Mac?

As Lotus Symphony is supported on Windows and Linux platform, Symphony 1.2.1 is now supported on Mac. Symphony provides a rich document editor on Mac OS X while taking advantage of the elegance of Aqua GUI theme. It can run on Mac OS X 10.5 (Intel).

Known Issues and Limitations

Comparing with Lotus Symphony 1.2 on Windows and Linux, the following features are not enabled on symphony 1.2.1 on Mac:

  • Programmability Toolkit
  • Send to Mail of Mail Merge

Graphics with text cannot be copied to other applications

In Lotus Symphony Spreadsheets and Lotus Symphony Presentations, insert a graphic and enter text into it, and then copy the graphic to another editor, or to Lotus Notes, the text inside the graphic might be lost.

Cannot copy cell formula from Symphony Spreadsheet to MS Excel

When copying a Spreadsheet cell formula in Symphony to MS Excel, it's not the formula but the formula value that copies to Excel.

Graphic cannot be inserted into custom shape

Symphony Documents doesn't support inserting graphic into custom shape. When opening the file containing such custom shape which includes graphic, the internal graphic will be lost.

Spellcheck does not support user dictionaries for some languages

Spell check does not support the user dictionaries of the following language versions: Hebrew, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Turkish and Hungarian.

Forms are not saved correctly in .PPT format

If a Lotus Symphony Presentations document that contains forms is saved as a Microsoft PowerPoint (.PPT) file, and is then re-opened by PowerPoint, the forms in that document will display as blank rectangular frames.

Tables in Lotus Notes cannot be copied to Lotus Symphony Presentations

Select and copy a table in Lotus Notes, and then paste it into Lotus Symphony Presentations. The result is that only the table text remains.

Animation on child objects in a group cannot be pasted

Mark several objects into one group, enter the group and set animations to the child object. When you copy and paste the group, the animations in the child object cannot be duplicated.

"Reversing Path Direction" is not supported for animation effect

"Reversing Path Direction" is an attribute for the 'Motion Paths' animation effects in Microsoft PowerPoint. This attribute is not supported in Lotus Symphony Presentations. If this attribute is set to 'True', there will be no animation effect.

Formula result is incorrectly shown when opening a Lotus 123 file

If a Lotus 1-2-3 file which contains formula text in cell with "Text Formula" style is opened by Lotus Symphony, the calculated formula result will be displayed (this is different from the title "incorrectly shown". Please check).

Saving unsupported document type might cause data loss

Unsupported document types can be opened by altering their extensions, but this might cause data loss when the file is saved back. For example, changing a .HTML file into a .SXW file and opening it might result in the document content being lost when subsequently saving the file.

Colors setting cannot be applied or restored correctly

Modifications on colors settings in File > Preferences cannot be applied by clicking the Apply button. As a workaround, click Modify to apply the modifications.

After completing modifications, clicking Restore Defaults will not restore the default colors setting.

DataPilot table Panel auto refreshes when modifying source data

After modifying the data source which is used to create a DataPilot table, the layout data in DataPilot panel is not consistent with the DataPilot table if the automatically update button is checked or click update button. It is consistent with the new source data.

Users cannot Undo if a document is not completely loaded

The "Undo" command does not work when a document is still loading (for example, if the page number in the status bar keeps on increasing), until that loading is finished.

TOC hyperlink in MS Word document does not work in Lotus Symphony

When an MS Word document with a TOC is opened by Lotus Symphony, the TOC hyperlink doesn't work as expected.

Workaround:

Select TOC and launch context menu, choose update Index/Table. The TOC hyperlink will be enabled.

Hyperlink target might be changed if pasted from Lotus Symphony Documents

In Lotus Symphony Documents, copy a hyperlink with non-empty frame type to other applications, the pasted hyperlink target will be appended with the frame type text. Then activating the hyperlink won't go to the target URL correctly.

Workaround:

Edit the pasted hyperlink and remove the appended frame type text from target URL. The hyperlink activation will be correct.

Order of animation might be changed after pasting multi objects

Create several objects in one page and set animations separately. Copy these objects and paste them to another page, the animation effect order might be different from previous. The pasted animation will be sorted by original object's created time order, not the animation setting order.

Workaround:

adjust the animations in the pasted object.

Note:

If the whole page is copied and pasted, the animation's order will be correct.

Portrait orientation might be changed when opening Freelance files

If a SmartSuite Freelance file which is set with Portrait page orientation is opened by Lotus Symphony, the page orientation might be changed to Landscape.

Workaround:

Users can modify the page orientation in the page properties dialog.

ODF file association is overwritten

ODF(.odt, .ott, .ods, .ots, .odp, and .otp) or OO1.0(.sxw, .sxi, .sxc, .stw, .sti, .stc) file types are overwritten when you install Lotus Symphony. If you want to change the association, consult your system administrator. The following gives one possible way to change the association of certain file extensions:

  1. In Finder, right-click a file with the extension of which the association you want to change, and click Get Info.
  2. In the Open With section, click the program that you want to use to open the file, or click Other... to choose the program on a disk.
  3. Click Change All... and click continue to confirm the change.

Some customized Preferences settings are not kept after upgrade

If you are internal users of previous Lotus Symphony release on Mac OS X, some Lotus Symphony customized preferences settings will be lost after upgrade. Users need to recover the preferences settings manually. The default settings will remain unchanged after upgrade.

Workaround:

Reconfigure those customized preferences settings manually after upgrade.

The Package For The Web utility only supports English

The very first unpack progress dialog from PFTW (Package For The Web) utility doesn't support translation, so it always keeps in English.

UI labels may be truncated with an ellipsis at the end

UI labels may be truncated with an ellipsis (...) at the end. To work around this issue, hover your mouse over the truncated label text, and the full text will be shown as a hover tip.

Microsoft OLE Object cannot be pasted into Lotus Symphony

Objects like shape and Chart from Microsoft Office 2008 on Mac OS X can't be pasted into Lotus Symphony as Microsoft Office Object through paste special. Lotus Symphony can crash in presentations.

Workaround: They can be pasted into Lotus Symphony as graphic.

Symphony crashes when working with edit Menu on print dialog like below

Click "File->Print" to launch Print dialog, then click the "PDF" button in the low left corner of the dialog and select "Edit Menu". Click "+" button, then click "Cancel" in "Open" dialog, Symphony is frozen.

No Symphony entry in the recent application list under "Apple->Recent items"

Following Key combinations don't work due to the conflict between Symphony and Mac OS X system.

  1. Cmd+H Align text to center
  2. Shift+F10 Context menu
  3. Shift+F11 Show style list dialog
  4. Shift+F12 Start a bullet list

Workaround:

They can be accessed through main menu or context menu.

Following Key combinations do not work in Symphony home page.

  1. Cmd+O Pop up "Open" dialog
  2. Cmd+W Close current tab
  3. Cmd+Shift+W Close all opened tabs

Help menu doesn't respond quickly.

Sometimes, it might take a couple of seconds before the drop-down menu displays after clicking Help on the main menu.

Symphony must be closed before installing a new version.

While installing Symphony, make sure that previous version is not running.

Symphony might crash when pasting the text copied from OpenOffice.org 3.0 as OLE object.

Copy some text from the Writer of OpenOffice.org 3.0, then paste them into Lotus Symphony Presentations as OLE object using paste special. Symphony might crash.
