OPSP of the year? It doesn't exist - not for the mac platform anyway.

I have yet to see a working product... therefore OpenOffice beats it hands down thus far. With NeoOffice you at least have a working package available for each platform. Amazingly, IBM has had a Linux version out for quite a while, but still no Mac port.

If IBM ever does release a mac native version, then it may be worthy of beating out the one completely cross-platform offering, as well as the MS offering that works on Windows and Mac.

Congratulations to the team. You're doing a fabulous job and I can't think of a more worthy office sweet.

I've installed Symphony on all of my Windows machines and I'm looking forward to making it my primary office suite on my Mac as well...

Very Impressed with the 'tour' videos. The Symphony developers appear to have spent a fair amount of time in cleaning up, and improving upon, the interface from the Oo project. However as Jim posted on Feb 13th, there is still no Mac version out, yet they have it running on Linux. There should be very little reason for not getting a beta version out for Mac, even if it needs to run under X11.

Certainly you must be kidding. With no way to change the default page margins, and a cumbersome way to turn off page numbering on the first page (field value from 0 to -1), among other things - this must have been a setup.

MS Office, much to my dismay, is considerably better although much more expensive too. Symphony has a long way to go, even though it is far prettier than OpenOffice.
  • Brian Levy said on Feb 28, 2008 4:54 PM:

I tried an earlier beta of Symphony along with Lotus Notes and IBM has the makings of a real integrated office suite and a new market and reason for Notes. Symphony had seemed to have a bit more integration than OOo but that same integration also seemed to be a hinderance, possibly as learning curve issue. While not having all the features of OOo, it did take longer to open and appeared to require more time to process. I finally uninstalled it. I use NeoOffice on a Mac and it works better in that environment than OOo. I have not tried Symphony or Notes on my Linux box. While I'd like to see it ported to OS X for the PPc, I won't hold my breath as the technology is will only experience a downward trend in terms of offerings.

In business, symphony lack database vs openoffice which have it's own even if it's like access so useless for most user.

I know you can't do all in the same time. Releasing the first tree parts most use it's a begining.

But why IBM doesn't already make a statement about database inclusion, even with a reasonalble pricetag.

Approach was the only product from ibm that I use with joy and ease of use.... Why not make a clear statement to update it in the symphony free suite or compatible paid add on.

Also.... still no beta or timetable for osX support... You said yes but no beta... so... without crossplatform.... no appeal... it's for that I turn from approach to filemaker. Make one use on all

Beta 4 is quite an improvement in performance. Had to wait for keystrokes ro respond in Beta2. Not any more.

About to download the Linux version and try it. The license agreement stopped me cold. Looks like something the old IBM would put together. You forgot to include the rules in case I wanted to use it on the moon.

Please release a stable version soon - I want to try it out!
  • Nico said on Apr 18, 2008 9:07 AM:

I would happily pay substantial money for my company to have access to an upgraded "Approach" Database frontend.

Nothing else in the market provides the flexability of Approach in manipulating data and the ease of generating reports on the fly.

My clients pay big bucks for my Approach skills, but the current versions are running more and more into incompatibility problems, especially with new printers.

Well I love it! Beta 4 has already become a daily use for me. I do a lot of reporting and such in my work, and it really helps when I can just open an application and work. I can't wait until the stable release.

The interface is very intuitive and easy to navigate, and the screen isn't cluttered with crap I'll never use such as in Office, and it's not horrible to look at like older Lotus products. The tabbed workspace is a great idea. The point is: everything just works.

The only thing you really need is an Approach upgrade, and Symphony will officially destroy MS Office and OpenOffice. Lastly, Symphony is just a cool name.

me no understand why Lotus SmartSuite is not being upgraded to work under MS Vista. I have SmartSuite 9.0 and it has problems with Vista that it didn't have under XP. If I have to I can live with Excel and Word but I am really going to miss Lotus Approach if and when I have to give it up.

In this day and age you NEED a database product and Approach was always my favourite.

I started with what is now Smart Suite when it was Ami Pro running under DOS. I stayed with it for something like two decades now, and watched IBM abandon it, just like they abandoned OS/2. I would LOVE to have a way of keeping access to all my old documents, presentations and spreadsheets when I complete my migration to Linux, and Symphony looks tantalizing. But will IBM support it??

My girlfriend works for IBM, and they are still using MS Office. So I would say the prospects are not good. (How can they expect us to take them seriously when they don't even use their own products?)
  • Bounds said on Jun 30, 2008 11:01 PM:

Just a short blurb, it still needs more work. Also it should not depend on Gnome libraries to install, could be an eclipse thing.

Also for the average user the install program needs to check for package dependencies.

Anyhow it's about equal to Thinkfree and open office, and behind EIOffice. For free though it is not bad. Hope they keep improving it.
  • Bounds said on Jun 30, 2008 11:07 PM:

Also I have never heard of Datamation but their winners must be based on a popularity contest or maybe just by reading the specs. If they actually used RedHat 5 they would have not voted for it. Also having used Office 2007 and a bunch of free and paid for office software, unfortunately Office 2007 still as the features that people want and need. Of course I have never used any of the advanced features of EIOffice or OpenOffice.

    Hello,

Lotus Symphony 1 is better than Open Office 2.4

Nevertheless, there is a lot a bugs and I still wait to deploy Lotus Symphony on others computers.

It's difficult to print only one sheet in spreadsheet part.

If you launch Open Office, then you can't load any document in Symphony until next reboot... etc...

Sometimes, Symphony closes itself without warnings.

It's not enough stable for a version 1.0 (maybe v0.95)

    Good job for Excel comptatibility

Yes, the fonts are still not-good looking (ugly, I'd say, as they are jaggedly displayed like on very low resolution monitor). Besides, Symphony is based on Eclipse and another Java application, so performance-wise, I feel it a bit slower than MSOffice.

I'd stick with OpenOffice, especially its recent-release (3.0). It supports truly multi-platforms (well, except old-days DOS..) and runs natively on our machines. It has many very competitive features similar to MSO, I guess.

Why doesn't IBM market this software more? A little advertisement would be huge for people like me who have never heard of it (until very recently i didn't). Smooth and quick interaction along with the fact that it's free would be huge. Especially to Microsoft Office users but also any other users as well now that it's for Macs as well as Linux and Windows.
