Profile image for Helen Yue 540...that's the number of days we have been working on Symphony 3.0, and finally we got it delivered for you. Symphony 3.0 is one release that not only contains much more new features and enhancements than previous releases, but also improves the UI and usability a lot, including brand new sidebar, more unified look and feel, toolbar customization, new clip-arts, refined thumbnail slider, optimized presentation view switch, and many other usability enhancements. I include several screen shots below for your preview. I would like to thank you for many great feedback here -- you all contributed to the release of 3.0, and invite you to download and try it.

To Symphony User eXperience design team, Symphony 3 is not an end but one early and major step toward our goal to provide a refreshed modern UI and make it smooth and efficient for your daily work. We still have more to do...we have a list of candidate items, but we would like to listen to your voice first. I list some questions as below. Please feel free to give us any other comments on UI. We will continuously post some survey to ask for your opinion on some specific design areas.

    I dont like the properties bar and would rather have it more similar to OO or Word where it is in the bar at the top of the screen

    I've been using Symphony for over 2 years, I have Microsoft office 2010 on my machine, but I always go to Symphony for my everyday use. Thank you for a great product. I love the sidebar. if you could add an email client, that would be awesome!

    The sidebar is brilliant - a rational use of the screen when most now have a widescreen aspect ratio. But the interface needs to be implemented single-mindedly, so everything can be controlled from sidebars rather than having to jump between sidebar, menus and toolbars. And until the program supports the Win7 taskbar properly and the bugs are sorted out I'm sticking with a very customised version of LibreOffice - it's no better on Win7 but at least it doesn't have the bugs.

    If you open the dialog "more options", you have no access to the document or the sidebar. You must first click "Ok", so the setting is visible in the document. And then open the dialog again for other settings. This slows down the workflow.

    All dialogs "more options" should have an apply-button and it should be possible to open several dialogs "more options" side by side. It should be possible to have access to the document and the sidebar, when the dialogs are open.

    I have highly endorsed Lotus Symphony now that a number of issues have been resolved. My clients all run multiple apps depending on their business needs (especially legal, real estate, wineries and accounting firms) and migrating to Lotus Symphony has been painless for most of them. For a few, a brief bit of hand holding is needed, but most are surprised by the ease and power that Symphony brings, without the added layers of complexity or cost that is the expectation of MS Office and many other well regarded programs.

    Furthermore, because many of my clients have started to migrate to LINUX systems and even MAC OSX (for a lot of portable computers) my clients have a great way to work in the same environment easily! Thank you very much!

    I love the sidebar and I use it in preference to other ways to get done what I want. As another commenter mentioned, the sidebar is situated in the best place for efficient use of screen estate. Placing it on the top, like the latest versions Office, reduces the vertical space available for editing. In addition, it might be just me but I find moving my mouse pointer to the right (side bar) of where I am working more effortless than up.

    I also the icons design because it is simple and pretty. Few colours, descriptive of what they do and easy to find what you want.

    The bluish background colours are also very easy on the eyes so I wouldn't alter them.

    In respect to whether we use the sidebar and how, I would suggest that you include code to track usage statistics which can be sent back to you. I consider such volunteer based usability tests acceptable when using a free product. Firefox4 is doing that and apart from interrupting the user in the middle of the browsing session which is annoying it is a simple and pleasant to use usage feedback mechanism.

    Toolbar:

    1. No! I didn't know I can customize the it.

    2... I use lotus symphony on my personal PC which is broken, so I can't accurately comment on the toolbar but I do not really use it except if I have to.

    Other comments:

    1. Provide multiple great presentation themes.

    2. Reduce the application loading time.

    3. Download is too complex...

    On element 3. of my previous comment I mean that downloading Lotus Symphony is ridiculously complex. I can understand being asked to register my email or sign in for statistical purposes but being told that due to export control reasons I will be notified when my request for download is processed is extremely annoying. By the way I am located in the UK and I filled in as location the United Kingdom, so I do not see the need for having to log-in to my email account in order to be informed that yes I can download it. I tolerated this, administrators will have to tolerate it, but my sister and the average Joe will close the browser and not bother.

    Have just started to use Symphony having been an origional lotus user in the 70's and still use it.

    One of its best applications is Approach as it is one of the simplest and most user friendly data bases to use.

    What are the chances of adding it the Symphony package?

    I would be soo glad to use the product if only it would install on Win 7 64 bit. Opening screen freezes and cannot use the product (yes I tried to reinstall). "Great" product guys!

    Tabbed documents is a good idea, but an even better idea would be to have a side by side view.

    Let me explain: You have a spreadsheet in one tab and a document in other. You need to write some of the numbers of the spreadsheet in the document. Yes, you can switch between both tabs using the mouse, and copy, paste, etc... But making a better use of wide screens would be to see both files in the same screen. Of course the Side bar will show the tools for the active document. Now think 2 spreadsheets.

    That usability feature could be an ass kicker. I work a lot with users in different industries and I've noticed that they get hooked with apps only because of 1 or 2 usability features that they like about that particular software. I digg Sym3.

    Side bar is nice to have. but many end users coming from MS Office, we still need to give them an option to have side bar as menu as well. It seems to me that Symphony product team is quite adamant not to do that and be unique but that does not help in terms of user adoption rate in future.

    Every time I close the lotus symphony on Window it tells me “lotus symphony is still running”, why software should annoy people?

    I want to move away from Word 2007, and the new lotus symphony is nice, but put them side by side and look at them, Word 2007 is just nicer for some reason.

    Resize Word and things are smoooooooth, resize symphony and things flick and repaint hundreds of times.

    Even more, try to go back to Symphony and close all the new documents at once using ctrl+W. You'll see that the app keeps hanging while closing, and if you make it fast an error message about a NULL pointer appears.

    Please, take that seriously into your account. Remove every kitchen sink feature. Make it robust, reliable and fast.

    I heard that Lotus Symphony is based on the Open Office project. If so, then I hope the developers of Symphony are aware of the file-eating flaw in Open Office.

    In open office, there is a bug that occurs, usually (not always) after a system crash, where one or all of the user's documents open with a prompt window about the ASCII filter. No mater one selects, the document will open with all text replaced by pound (#) signs. Some people say the files can be recovered by saving over the current copy of some kind of user profile that Open Office saves for each user, with an older version, but most people have been totally unable to recover their files. It looks like a problem with the user preference related files. Better off without them?

    Sidebar is great, Much better than MS Ribbons. Most of users have panoramic monitors, so vertical toolbar is better. On the other hand I'm a programmer so I'm used to Eclipse/Netbeans-like layouts.

    In OO.org I like those additional toolbars that floats over a document when table, punctation etc. is selected. There are some helpful buttons that Lotus Symfony doesn't have.

    - move up/down with subitems

    - table contous

    - quick table creation

    Mes remarques sont les suivantes :

    . permettre de modifier et de choisir les préférences que l'on souhaite dans cette 'sidebar'.

    . Améliorer son l'esthétisme et la rapidité globale du produit.

    . l'accès au téléchargement nécessite d'être plus simple pour ouvrir Symphony et proposer une version 3.0 FP1 en 1 seul package.( c'est un produit grand public, non ? )

    I use Ubuntu 10.10. It is much slower when opening than libreoffice! And is heavy working with it. And it crashes a lot!

    But, I must say, is my favorite!

    AND PLEASE, had the possibility to sync files with google docs!!!

    Really like the new look.

    Really need to have you open mail merge up to outside programs like TB. Not all of us are Notes users.

    Agree that an Approach like database would be a great addition.

    But the mail merge is a killer for me. I need to go back to OO for now and will gladly come back to Symphony when that is corrected.

    I use the sidebar a lot. It's going to take a little to get used to, though. It's different than MS Office 2007. I'm typing this now in Symphony for wordcount.

    I'm a student using Linux. That is why I use Symphony. I have Ubuntu 10.10. Yes, it's a bit sluggish on my single-core Centrino laptop from 2006, but I didn't buy the thing for performance. I haven't had the freezing problems.

    One suggestion: Please, please, pretty please, allow us to adjust the margins by inches and centimeters. I'm a stickler for this.

    You would do yourself a favour and read the numerous suggestions about copying a lot of the features over from Lotus SmartSuite. Oh yes, your own product.

    No, the UI doesn't _look_ as slick, but it is hands down much more functional.

    Remember that when I get to work, I want to get to work and the UI should stay out of the way. Big fancy UI features (such as MS Ribbon Bar) are just plain annoying. A floating tool bar that can "rollup" and get out of the way would be much better. Hey, guess what, Lotus Smartsuite has that.

    I am soooo unimpressed w/ 3.0. I can't open Lotus 5.0 files & seem to be one of many with this issue. Apparently the '/' and the 'shift & colon' no longer activate the spread sheet or cell formatting commands. I don't understand who develops these products. They clearly have no understanding of day to day use. I guarantee I can do what I can do in Lotus 5.0 using the old command keys to build spread sheets faster than anyone else in the universe moving a cursor around the spread sheet. If I am going to try all this new stuff I may as well go to Excel w/ which I am already somewhat proficient. IBM was smart enough to give Symphony away but not smart enough not to fix things that weren’t broken.

    2. I do not work with toolbars and only use sidebars for styles but I would like to create my own floating toolbar with one button to quickly active/deactivate the spell checking or to configure my own keyboard shortcut to do it !

    3. The big missing feature in French is the "french spacing" typographic rule. It is included in Open/Libre/Office 3. Without this feature every time you type a double-punctuation in french (; or :) you're making a typographic error, unless you use Ctrl-Maj-Space before. A plugin will be welcome.

    Everything is wonderful in Symphony. The best feature, IMHO, is side panels. Very appropiate nowadays when screens are wider, not higher. Saves lots of vertical space.

    Horizontal bars could be much thinner, though.

    It's a waste of time when you have to click on the Symphony icon to start the application, and then you have to choose the specific tool you need, i.e. the word processor, the presentation maker or the spreadsheet. I would appreciate having three different icons in my menu in order to start immediately with the tool I need.

    I have to use MS Office at work, but at home, I have always used Lotus products, beginning with the Lotus SmartSuite in about 1996. I liked the SmartSuite very much and was sad that IBM decided not to continue it.

    I found that Symphony was a worthy successor to SmartSuite, but now in Version 3, IBM has dropped support for SmartSuite files. That lack is a serious omission, considering the many SmartSuie files on my computer.

    I hope IBM will reconsider and restore SmartSuite support, particularly for LWP and 123.

    Support for WrodPro format files is important to me -- I have thousands of them. In fact, I still use WordPro! WodPro's floating properties box is neat, and using function keys to implement paragraph styles is magic. I also like the SmartIcons. Can Symphony be more like this?
