A potential security issue has been identified in the OpenOffice.org code which may impact IBM Lotus Symphony . CVE-2009-200 and 201 have been created to document the issue. More information is available at this link http://www.openoffice.org/security/cves/CVE-2009-0200-0201.html

It would be really clever to have a direct link in your announcement to the updated code.

What are the differences between Lotus Symphony and Open Office?
  • Supportadmin5 said on Sep 16, 2009 10:08 AM:

@Roger You can easily find the download button at home page.

@bsdhacker Lotus Symphony leverages OpenOffice.org code with the Eclipse framework, so they are different in User Interface, Development Toolkit, mechanism of Plug-ins etc.

Hope it always remains free. Tired of purchasing overpriced microsoft products.

What is the license? Where is the source code? OpenOffice.org is GPL software. Is Lotus Symphony GPL as well?

Why do I have to click a dozen times to download the software? Why not display the license agreement and other legalese within the INSTALLER instead of bothering people whom only want to download it?

Ever heard of a good old FTP SITE?

I don't understand this. Has a completely new version of Symphony been released since 1.3.0? Or has the updated code been incorporated into the existing release 1.3.0 - if that's the case, why isn't it 1.3.1? I just spent a half hour removing 1.3.0 from my PC thinking I was installing 1.3.1 - nope, I just re-installed 1.3.0. Thanks. guys.

bsdhacker. if i were you, i'd stick with openoffice if you're using it right now. lotus symphony is very clunky. it needs a total overhaul if it's going to compete with any of the free or paid-for software out there.

i don't think ibm is dedicating any skilled labor to making symphony. you can tell this by this website. to see everything on the page, you have to have your browser opened completely. if it's not, only part of the page shows up and there are no scroll bars for you to use so you can access the rest of the screen.

    totally amateur.

bsdhacker: I can only speak for the differences on Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Symphony works great on Snow Leopard for opening Powerpoint slides and Word docs. OpenOffice.org does not work well on Snow Leopard with the files I have been receiving lately. I can't speak for other users on other OSs. In my experience Symphony is great.

I have gone back to Open Office, works great under Snow Leopard for me. Lotus Symphony feels unfinished in many areas of the UI and it crashes every 15 minutes. Did several complete re-installs with no improvement. So far i had zero problems with latest version of OO (3.1.1)

Symphony is nothing like the Lotus Suites from the good old Windows 95 days. Why not improve on the lotus suite and repalce Symphony with it?
  • Test User said on Oct 28, 2009 3:38 PM:

Symphony 1.3 has stability problems on Snow Leopard, and it is somewhat slow on a dual-core 2.4GHz machine. I'll stick with NeoOffice for now.
  • tommyhawk said on Oct 29, 2009 4:43 PM:

I have had zero negative experience with Symphony. no crashes and is much less "clunky" than OpenOffice. I love it!
  • kjs said on Nov 1, 2009 12:20 PM:

unfortunately they didn't fix a bug which gets into the way.... When you open a file from a USB hard-drive (in winDOS XP) the drive can't be unmounted any more. OOo doesn't have the problem so it's an IBM/winDOS invention. No problem in CentOS or Kubuntu 9.04.

Could NOT download Symphony from the IBM site. Had to go somewhere else that actually worked.

After receiving the product, I will not use- I loved Lotus 123 and used the original version for years. This Symphony will not be a useful product for me.

I have tried it all but I still use SmartSuite 9.5 for most of my work.
  • tch2008 said on Nov 13, 2009 8:43 PM:

    Hello everybody,

I tested Symphony with MacOS X 10.58 and I returned to Open Office 3.1.1 after a week. If Symphony is a good idea, it is impossible today to work seriously with it. I thing this suite is in progress but seem to be unfinished.
  • Henry Clairmont said on Nov 16, 2009 7:25 PM:

Symphony has a nice user interface, but that's where the up side ends. After using Symphony with the latest update for the past 4 weeks, I too have returned to Open Office. Symphony is at best, beta software. It's difficult to believe that it's from the same company that developed Lotus SmartSuite. In addition, it is not even based on an up to date version of Open Office. One of the reasons that I wanted to use Symphony is to convert my old Lotus Wordpro documents to the open document format. It's disappointing that IBM / Lotus could not even write a decent filter for their own Lotus software. Only the simplest of documents were able to convert without needing significant time to fix and reformat each document.

Is IBM Lotus Symphony a Proprietary software? If yes under which license it is
  • eightminds.com said on Nov 21, 2009 8:10 AM:

I like the concept behind Symphony. Are their any plans to make it more stable for Ubuntu 9.10 or above? I'm able to run Symphony but not install plugins.
  • David said on Nov 22, 2009 1:12 AM:

I have 1.3 installed. Is there a new version numberfor this security update or do I have to uninstall and re-install the "current" 1.3. Seems confusing that you didn't change the version number for this fix. Please advise.
  • Richard said on Nov 25, 2009 6:32 AM:

I cannot install Lotus symphony for evaluation, since the only

download option appears to be for i386, and all our Ubuntu

systems are running as x86_64. Is there an alternative build?
  • Ed said on Nov 25, 2009 6:23 PM:

Why is the performance on Symphony so bad? It's not a space shuttle you are making here. Slim, fast, and small should be the goal of any Office productivity suite. When you're slower than Open Office, you have some major issues to fix.

Sure. IBM has 100K employees you can force them into using this. But the rest of the real world won't touch this until performance is at least as good as OpenOffice.
  • Michael said on Nov 26, 2009 3:17 PM:

Now you can say what you want about performance and some clunkyness people feel with Symphony. But isn't it great how open IBM Lotus is now that they even leave negative comments like this up?

I had great experiences with 1.2 and 1.3 so far - printing on 11x17 wasn't so great under 1.2 but the rest worked great.

Now, I am trying it under Windows 7, not sure if thats going to work well.....
  • Michel said on Nov 29, 2009 5:04 AM:

I am surprised by some of the comments above. I have been using OpenOffice.org extensively for close to 10 years I believe. I tried Symphony for one specific reason: my main spread sheet that contains my various companies account summaries + my own bank accounts with many internal links and links to files in my PC became suddenly so slow after changing somewhere from OOo 2.4 to 3.1 (I believe 3.0 was already slow but not sure). So I compared Symphony with the various cache options (Vista, Dual core 2GB).If no cache, similar; with cache: 25" on Symphony instead of 48; I also like the tabbed presentation. Did find a bug (cannot open a file that includes "+" in its name) and the big problem is that it cannot open MS password protected xls

I downloaded Symphony 1.3 hoping to again be able to use some of my old 1980's spreadsheet Symphony files from those years...but can not get the new Symphony to open them...how can IMB Lotus Symphony have a current Symphony that will not take old Symphony files? Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how I can open my old symphony spreadsheet files?

  • Jan Forbes said on Jan 29, 2011 12:20 PM:

I've used Lotus Smartsuite for years and have a back history of documents I don't want to lose. My most recent PC purchase runs Windows 7 and Office 2010 and is a 64 bit machine but it has left me struggling to find a solution to opening my old documents. Symphony appeared to be the solution but the v1.3 that purports to open snartsuite documents wont install on my new PC and v3 which did load OK has no backward compatibility with Smartsuite - any ideas?
