It's easy to do right things

Profile image for Efim Alexandrov I’m working in the field of public relations and corporate management. Everything I do is widely open to press, my colleagues and friends. So, it is important for me to have legal and compatible software. That’s why a few months ago I started to search an alternative charge free office suite for my notebook.

Lotus Symphony impressed me by its clear and smart user interface. All things I want to do are easy with it. The toolbar depends from the context of work and there is no problem to find exactly what I need. Symphony dialogs are unified with Windows Vista dialogs such as Save... or Open... and document tabs are excellent. It is a best way to manage opened docs, I think. For the first look Symphony is a simple product. But is not so, in general. All helpful things are there. And at last - there is no stupid problem with margin change on ruler (when you trying to change left margin again and again and again in MS Word).

Looking forward for Russian grammar plug-in and some bugs to remove. Tomorrow I'll try Lotus Symphony in a real office and outdoor environment. And maybe next weekend this story will continue with another good chapter.

Thank you, IBM, and I wish you luck with this project. Many people need it.

By the way, I found Lotus Symphony occasionally. Why don't you talk widely about it in Russia?

working in pr? yep. the story sure sounds like a piece of pr all right. tried it. didn't like it. it's way to clunky on my dual core pc. i wonder just how much slower it will be on a single processor machine.

    hmmm.. nice story...

But the product is a piece of miswritten code.

Why they not go back to DW4 !

Be aware: the writer has some nasty bugs you will find for example if handling large documents with pictures and markup arrows. I used Lotus Symphony for about a year for work (makeing manuals for machines) but had to ditch it because of bugs and the apparent lack of updates.

OpenOffice is ahead in respect to bug-fixes, and better to use for work. There is something called backpatching - that could be used to move bugfixes from OpenOffice to Lotus Symphony.

Sometimes collaborate written software gets lots of new bugs, its a good idea to keep the installer for some older, stable version.

Maybe the integrations with Lotus Notes is more important than having a good working software for those whom also use Notes.
