Introducing OpenDocument

Buzzmaster1  |  Apr 18, 2008 4:37 PM
Profile image for Buzzmaster1 The OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications (ODF) is an XML standard that lets you store and exchange office application documents, including word-processor, spreadsheet, and presentation files. Whether you try to perform special tasks on files saved from such applications or work on applications to process such files, you should become familiar with this important format. Learn about the two possible forms of OpenDocument files, as multipart packages and as single XML documents, and learn how to structure text and tabular information in OpenDocument.

When will you put Microsoft office 2007 file formats into Symphony so we can open those files?
  • Rob said on May 2, 2008 7:03 AM:

Hopefully never, do you want IBM to be responsible for helping the acceptance of OOXML?

Given that IBM's Lotus Symphony will be Generally Available (GA) in the coming weeks or months; and, can be seamlessly integrated into Lotus Notes.... where in the world is the "Open" Lotus SmartSuite product that was promised by IBM over a year ago!

    Thank you.

Umm.... 90 % of users out there are using Micosoft Office (sadly) and Office 2007 is becoming more common. Even on IBM download sites you find .docx pps. Without the ability to pen such docs and work with them what good is symphony? we need to work in the MS world people. Even in a company, the power users will have Office even if the rest of the company is using symphony.

    @ Paul

MS Office 2007 files are not OOXML compliant (yet). :D

Heck... most folks can't find the "Save As" function in 2007 to save down to 97-2003 MS formats.

The new OpenOffice beta doesn't support the new MS format at this time either. I say, relax, and let the developers develop.

Does Lotus open NeoOffice documents and spreadsheets?
  • Snard said on May 22, 2008 8:32 PM:

Yes, NeoOffice is a variant of OpenOffice and thus supports ODF files. NeoOffice and Symphony both have the same parent so to speak.
  • Snard said on May 22, 2008 8:35 PM:

As a side note to that, the Symphony code is just a little behind OpenOffice, which will support OOXML in it's next release. I am sure that Symphony will soon follow.
  • King Alfred said on Jun 4, 2008 5:22 PM:

As a side note to Snard, OOXML will *not* be supported in the next Open Office.org version - nor will it appear in Microsofts Office. The Office 2007 format will be. And Symphony is developed in parallel - so it is not behind, so to speak.

I read somewhere that Symphony is based on OpenOffice code of ver1.1.

Is it ODF 1.1 or OpenOffice code 1.1 ?

    Pls clarify
