Profile image for Li Xin Since Symphony 3.0 had been released almost one year time, there are still usability issues in Symphony. We know that we have a lot of work to do. We also need to hear user’s voice and opinions. Your feedback is really important to our product. From now on, we will continuously post the usability issues improvement ideas to collect your comments and feedback. Please feel free to give us any suggestion.

1. Can not open multi-files and insert multi-images.

Current issues: User can not open multi-files and images at one time. User need to insert images one by one. It's inefficient for user.

Design Proposal: Enable open multi-files and insert multi-images. Select multi-images by frame or pressing Ctrl or Shift(Like the same behavior in other windows software).

Please refer to Figure 1

2. Font list

Current issues:

1) “Recently used fonts” does not work when user changes slides.

2) Our current design just use a line to differentiate two categories(“Recently used fonts” and “All fonts”). There is no category title in font list. It is hard for user to understand the meaning of each category.

Design Proposal:

1) “Recently used fonts”works when user changes slides, and also works even switch files. But if user closes symphony and restarts, 'Recently used fonts' will be cleared.

2) Add title to each category. The Maximum Number of 'Recently used fonts' should be 5.

Please refer to Figure 2

3. Hard to change area color for text box and shapes.

Current issues: User can not fill or change area color when he clicks in the text boxes or shapes. User has to select shape border until the cursor is hiding.

Please refer to Figure 3.

Design proposal: User could fill or change color whenever he click in shapes or select shape border. Please refer to Figure 4.

4. Hard to fill or change text and image border.

Current issues:

User does not know how to fill border color after he inserts a text box or image. The current interface makes user confused. It seems that user can change color and width, but actually when user try to change the color, it does not work. Because it select 'none' as the line style by default setting. User has to select “continuous” in style menu to enable the color panel and then fill or change color.

Please refer to Figure 5.

Design Proposal:

Replace the label position of Width and Style, Select “none” as line style by default setting, and at the same time, other labels(Color, Width, Transparency and Arrow)should be disabled. Enabled these labels until line style is not “none”.

Please refer to Figure 6.

5. Shapes need to be reintegrated.

Current issues:

Confusing. There are two shape groups in current design. It is hard for user to know the shape he wants to draw is in which group. User need to open drop-down menu to find the shape he wants to draw is in which group.

Design Proposal:

Integrate two categories to one group. (10 shapes per row).

Support ”Recently used shapes” .

Please refer to Figure 7.

6. Hard to do accurate image cropping and shape area scaling.

Current issues:

The minimum unit is too large. It is difficult for user to crop images or adjust shapes area by accurate action.

Please refer to Figure 8.

Design Proposal:

Make the unit smaller and more accurate.

My biggest dissappointment is that the last version of Lotus Symphony is unable to open Lotus Smartsuite files (both text and spreadsheet).

Based upon an old version of Open Office (which is now beeing outdated by LibreOffice ...) is now lacking it's interest regarding the two leaders (MS Office, and LibreOffice.

Do you plan to release as soon as possible a plugin that will allow Lotus Smartsuite users to keep working on their documents?

If not so, I am afraid that the game is over for Symphony (even though it remains a pleasant suite...).

    ;-))

    Hi!

I have a computer with 2 GB memory. But Lotus symphony is so slow!!! It needs 15 seconds to open program. MS Word needs only 2 seconds to open program. Can you do anything that Lotus symphony go much faster?

Best regards from Bosnia and Hercegovina!

    To Senad Delihasanovic,

Your computer carries a good amound of memory for fast opening of Lotus Symphony.

Take the following steps for best performances:

    1. Open Lotus Symphony

    2. Click "File" on top bar

    3. Select "Preferences" in the pull down menu

    4. Click on "Symphony"

    5. Tick mark -Enable performance optimization- box

    6. Click on radio button "High"

    7. Push "Apply" at the bottom right of the screen.

    You're done.

As far as usability is concerned, I would like to see the following:

    1. Better compatibility with MS Office file formats.

    2. Better documentation of the available Plug-Ins.

    3. The ability to natively use a non Notes email client for mail merge and send to email without needing to install a plug-in to accomplish this. Also, the ability to choose in the setup options the ability to use either a Notes, Thunderbird, Outlook, or Microsoft Mail address list.

    4. Better database connectivity and better documentation on how to use the database access plug-in.

    5. A wider variety of plug-ins.

As a current student, I am just getting used to where things are versus what I used to with MS Word. In terms of regular documents, this works just as good as MS Word. I will be sure to comment if I have any issues, but for now, I really like it!

A couple more comments specifically about the solicited feedback.

    1. I like having the ability to insert multiple images. It would be helpful to have the proposed dialog box in figure 1 to be a docked sidebar (like clip art). It would also be helpful to have Symphony automatically add graphics in "My Pictures" and "My Videos" on Windows systems as clip art galleries. 2. I like the idea of showing "recently used fonts," but the number of recently used fonts that are shown should be configurable in the File --> Preferences dialogs. 3. Currently, when I select a text box with a single click, I am able to easily change fill color. So, I don't quite understand the proposed difference. 4. I like proposal 4 also.

    Fault scenario:

    - Select text.

    - Type the font size in the properties panel. (do not select size from the menu)

    - Hit <Enter>

    - Fault: Selected text is erased.

    Lotus Symphony Version 3.

I used smartsuite for many years and found the address book first class

Now I have windows 7 and had to change to symphony and can not find an address book

Surely this is a bad omission

I really like the suite, but as a linux user with gnome I will love to have color integration with the rest of the desktop.
