Lotus Symphony Release 1.2 with Mac OS X Support Available

Buzzmaster1  |  Nov 4, 2008 5:05 PM
Lotus Symphony release 1.2 is now available and includes Beta support for the Mac OS X platform in English. I know many of you have been waiting for this new platform and hope you will take the time to try it out and give us your feedback. We expect to have a Generally Available version for Mac in all the languages we support in 1Q09.

In addition to the Mac OS support, we have added some new enhancements to our Data Pilot support in our spreadsheet tool and have made the Ubuntu platform Generally Available. We've also made some performance improvements. For all the details on what's included in this release take a look at the release notes.

As always we welcome your feedback and suggestions so let us know how we are doing.

    Good news!

As a Windows user I can't test it, but this sure sounds nice!

You have no hope of this every getting anywhere, when it requires such an insane procedure to download. I fell like I've been transported back in time to the web in 2001. What's next, a download queue??

    Seriously - one button download.

Secondly, built in update mechanism akin to Firefox. Download update in background, and install on relaunch. End of story.

    Thanks :)

Managed to finally download and try out the OS X version - it's very nice.

Beside some modest retheming being needed, all the functionality is there, and I'm very glad that I can now support Lotus Symphony users on Windows, without having to boot Windows myself, and that makes a great difference.

    Thank you!

    Thank you very much indeed!

Finally I can read my old lotus-files with my Mac.

    Awesome!

I am really impressed - especially with the links and side note Plug-ins. The interface is nice looking although not immediatey intuitive having used MS word and OOO. It would be nice to be able to export to .doc format (for when I really have to!).

Thank you for this, for an early beta it is outstanding.
  • Rich said on Nov 6, 2008 7:57 PM:

Thanks for this. I have waited for a year to see what IBM would do. I am just beginning, but already see the value of your uncluttered interface.
  • Karl said on Nov 7, 2008 8:35 AM:

Y'know, at first I was thinking that the first Mac version including alphas, betas and sometimes gammas, would arrive somewhere into 2009. Good work people.
  • Karl said on Nov 7, 2008 9:28 AM:

Looks the same as my Windows version, but way too slow. I have 2GB of RAM and 2.4GHz Intel Core Duo.
  • giZmo said on Nov 8, 2008 4:30 PM:

C'mon! No PPC support? Geeeeze! Maybe later?

I was always a huge fan of Lotus software.

Now that I have a PPC Mac Mini right in the kitchen, it would be nice to use this software before heading out to work. ;-)
  • Kenneth said on Nov 8, 2008 6:23 PM:

Seconder for 10.4 & PPC support. PPC macs are firmly in my future as far as I can see right now. I got lured in by "Mac OS X" it wasn't till I got to download that I discovered it required 10.5 and intel :o(

It seems like a great program, and I'm glad they addressed some of the issues with shortcut keys that have annoyed mac users of openoffice and neooffice to no end. Unfortunately there seems to be a problem with the spellcheck function in that it does not seem to work. This is something that definitely needs to be addressed since no one will take a word processor seriously if it does not have a functional spellchecker.

Very nice...I used to use Lotus SmartSuite before I switched over to a Mac. I like how streamlined the interface is--one of the original reasons I used to use SmartSuite was that MS Office was too bulky on the tiny monitor I used to have, and I could definitely see this sort of slimness being comfortable on my MacBook's small screen as well.

One of my main suggestions would be to add a dedicated text styles section to the Properties Sidebar. I currently use Nisus Writer Pro for word processing, and the Styles portion of the tooldrawer is invaluable when I'm working with big documents. Something akin to Nisus's style view would also be a nice improvement usability-wise over the MS Office-like style editing window.
  • James said on Nov 9, 2008 3:54 PM:

This reads very nice, looks nice in the screen shots! But, to ignore 25 MILLION PPc Users is shortsighted.

Support 10.4 and PPc and watch as millions sign up.

PPc? Hello? YOUR OWN IBM G4-G5 technology! Could it be too difficult for the powerful IBM?

    PLEASE.
  • oj said on Nov 10, 2008 1:11 PM:

great! now for the ppc version...

    Ahem:

    Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5.

I would love to try Symphony Lotus.

Another PPC lover here - I think the (full) POWER5,6,X versions of your alls chip would be really great for OS X 10.6 - 10.X. I hope Apple keeps the PPC builds happening, why wouldn't you want an OS, as nice as that to run on many platforms?

I'll try this app on the Mac Pro (8-Core) Intel - sheesh.

Such a shame all these PPC maxed out on 10.5.x.

    (yes, I've heard of Linux)

I prefer to skip, rather than trudge (chip arch.).

  • Ernie Beal said on Nov 17, 2008 7:22 AM:

Our Mac Intel test users love it, but we need PPC support to make it useful. Otherwise, we must stay with NeoOffice/OpenOffice.
  • Goetz E Hardtmann said on Nov 18, 2008 10:06 AM:

I loved Lotus 123 and I used it for many, many years. I hope I will do fine with the spreadsheet in Symphony.

Two questions: How can I import Lotus 123 files into Symphony?

The side-bar with all the editing tools etc DISAPPEARED - How can I get it back. HELP. Goetz.

What about a PPC or Universal version? Everybody else does Universal. I stay with OO (with database support as well, but as we know no DB2 on Mac)
  • Sébastien said on Nov 21, 2008 12:36 PM:

Is this a joke? No OS X 10.4 support? :(

    looks great. works... so far.

One things i've noticed is that launcher icon doesn't synchronize with the launched application. That is... if you add the Symphony icon from Applications folder, and then you launched Symphony from the Dock, it creates another icon.

I've used Open Office (NeoOffice) on my Mac at home and enjoy it. My only complaint may be lack of templates and the automatic updating didn't work.

I'll give this a shot too.
  • WK said on Dec 1, 2008 8:56 AM:

    Great effort.

However both the Mac & Win version felt clunky, slow to load, and not very user friendly. Just like Lotus Notes, confusing interface, clunky, and very 1990s. Anyway it is free, thanks IBM, but i prefer Google Doc.

I tried just to launch the website to download this program and my IMac 10.5.5 won't even open the site. What gives?

    10.5.6...

(FWIW I had a very hard time getting to this announcement via Safari/Webkit, so I linked via Camino)

    1. I vary much hope that the new MacOSX version addresses startup speed problems as you have so admirably done on Windows versions! (I am an old IBM mainframe veteran and so I KNOW you can do it!)

    2. Now that Sun's in trouble and sinking, I hope you'll pick up the flag, and carry on the OpenOffice tradition on your own, if need be. Go IBM!

Every time I try to download LS my damn OS X just locks up! I thought an Imac wasn't supposed to have these problems. that's why I bought it for three times the price of a PC - and here I am still having problems and not being able to find drivers blah blah blah...

Bill Gates: I'm sorry, please forgive me and let me have my W-XP back again...
  • Pedrof said on Jun 10, 2009 2:26 PM:

December 2009 and still no PPC support and still a complex download procedure.

Such a shame for what could quickly become a decent alternative to Microsoft Office.
