Lotus Symphony Beta 4 Has Arrived

Buzzmaster1  |  Feb 1, 2008 10:39 AM
The Beta 4 release adds many functions requested by the community including the ability to add new pages from an existing presentation into your current one. We've had great early feedback on the continued progress we have been making as well as the speed in which we are delivering the new functions.

Beta 4 is also our Developers Release. With this release we are making available a new developers toolkit, dedicated developers page on our website and a support forum for developers. All of this will enable developers to add functions to Symphony and include Symphony in their solutions. We've opened up the inherent capability in Symphony to add Eclipse based plugins that can either add standalone function or combined with the newly available API calls create new solutions.

IBM will be providing plugins on our new plugins page on this website. Today we're making available an Eclipse plugin that allows you to enter a support forum post while working in one of the editors. The plugin allows you to capture your thoughts in real time and post a cool new idea you had while you were using Lotus Symphony without leaving the Lotus Symphony application.

We're also going to allow 3rd parties who have created plugins or solutions for Lotus Symphony to post information about them on the plugins page. You'll be able to see a description of the solution and find out how to get the plugin or more detail directly from the 3rd party.

Remember to check the new plugins page frequently as we will be adding new plugins frequently.

And of course please continue to give us your feedback in our regular support forums.

Hmm, i'd love to try it on 64-bit Ubuntu. In fact all of us at work would. But we all left 32-bit behind ages ago. Come on IBM, it must be possible to produce a 64-bit .deb.

Hi! I have downloaded beta 4 and try to install it on to of beta 3. During the installation I get the following error:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package "IBM Lotus Symphony.msi" in the box below."

I'm using Windows XP SP2 UK.

  • Jeff said on Feb 9, 2008 8:12 PM:

when I first saw the Word Processing window I thought wow - and then:

Proper Styles refer to preformatted text like heading 1 - they should be the most prominent option on the pane - not manual formatting like bold and italic.

Manual formatting like italic - is now called attributes

The biggest problem with long documents is people not using proper styles to manage the text - and manually formatting with bold, font size and so on.

I downloaded it today. It is great. But still has some shortage.

    1. Slow, open files, PPT files.

    2. Formula, I failed to find a method to input a formula.

    3. Compatibility? Not tested yet.

It is based on OpenOffice, isn't it? IBM will do better in the final version.

  • TrueCrimson said on Feb 19, 2008 4:48 PM:

For everybody who complains about it being slow:

Remove the Microsoft Office programs that run in the background constantly when you install it, and then try loading Word.

If you still aren't happy, go waste your money on a copy of Office. I will stick with OpenOffice and Symphony.

    Jeff:

Don't sweat the terminology baby. "Attributes" is a Microsoft (R) term -- we're LOTUS FANS -- those of us who have been 'round since 'Version 1.0 ' know the difference. Just ask any "bean-counter " who has ever attempted to resolve the "term" differences between SIMPLY Accounting (R), DDE, and LOTUS 1-2-3 SmartSuite. One can go "bling-bling" if one interjects M into L.

KEEP THIS STUFF UP - ITS GOT EXCELLENT POTENTIAL!!

    Gaarne Uw advies.

Yes, Symphony is now out of beta, and version 1.0 has been released. It has tons of improvements over the betas, so I highly recommend downloading it if you haven't already!
  • Coloseo said on Jun 5, 2008 10:57 AM:

Thank you for your information. I love to have beta-programms, because it's not so fixed like the others, so I've tried to get this, without knowing, that 1 is newer.

    Thank you Alex

    Lotus Symphony Beta 4 Rocks!!

I use a lot of Spreadsheet and some of the features i have found useful are:

    1. Ability to Merge and Split cells easily

    2. Ability to set the Borders easily

    3. Ability to paste inside merged cells

    4. Ability to insert rows in merged region

    Keep up the good work!!
