Fantastic. I look forward to trying it out.

Do you guys have any plans to create an online space where documents can be easily shared, similar to Google Docs or Office Live? This would be a real shot-in-the-arm for Symphony users, and would really help IBM to keep ahead of / in line with the competition.

If you wanted to use the musical idiom for a name, why not call it "Ensemble"?

Darn, I just downloaded it yesterday! Time to upgrade!

For sharing documents with other users try these 2 sites.

Greenhouse is free service and lotus live is paid. Lotus Live is really very good for working with company outsider consultants and is much more featured. Greenhouse is more or less demo site for Lotus products, but you can get on GH free Lotus Sametime Connect account without bother with installing Sametime server (not easy), which is excellent chat system, especially web conferences

Why do you blur out the authors of the widgets when showing the widget catalog? (And then mess up and expose them briefly anyway)
  • Jon said on Jun 20, 2009 10:02 PM:

I'm keen to try it but your download process is way to complicated, requiring registration, and using a special download application. So I gave up.
  • Richard said on Jun 21, 2009 6:56 AM:

It does require registration (can be confusing but worth the effort) but doesn't need a special download application (Director) - just click on the http download option - worked for me
  • Stratocaster said on Jun 22, 2009 2:42 PM:

Agree with Jon. Even after registering, I could not download it using either HTTP or the Download Director. Not sure if it is our firewall or the IBM website. But I don't have these sorts of problems with other software downloads (e.g., Adobe, Mozilla, or MICROSOFT) at the office.
  • Husni said on Jun 22, 2009 4:42 PM:

I agree... Download needs a major overhaul to make it easier..

I used Lotus Smart Suite for long time and be realy glad to have Symphony now. Especialy the import functionality for my old .123 files that came with Symphony 1.1 was highly appreciated. Unfortunately that import filter has worsen with Symphony 1.2 and 1.3 a lot. What a pity!

HOW DO I GET THE CD FREE?
  • Rumple Stilskin said on Jul 9, 2009 5:10 AM:

Shmucks. You dont have to register. And the http download works like any other.
  • Bannonb said on Jul 10, 2009 5:48 PM:

The IBM ID is used to protect IBM and you. Although security is always added inconvenience, who can argue that we don't need it?

The Download director is cool because it shows the value of the IBM download grid application--using multiple connections to get multiple file fragments and maximizing your internet connection.

After all is said and done OpenOffice can be downloaded more easily. Also on Google the words "free download" should appear so we know it's free.

I downloaded the Suse Linux version by right clicking and hitting save. There wasn't any problem with the download using Firefox and setup was easy. I did a print test page and everyone worked without any problems. It turned out to be a very nice piece of Linux software.

    Thanks.

After downloading Lotus Symphony 1.3, I tried to upgrade the older one, but failed. It said "can't find RCP base plug-in" and uninstalled the old one. What should I do?. ( I am only end user )
  • DKT said on Aug 25, 2009 10:35 AM:

I installed 1.3 almost as soon as it was available. My only complaint is you have to uninstall the previous version before installing 1.3 and I had the previous version running as part of my Lotus Notes window which I really liked. Now it is installed separately on the Task Manager bar. No big deal, but I have been looking at plug-ins.
  • Richard Sistrunk said on Aug 29, 2009 1:26 PM:

I just installed Symphony 1.3 (upgrading 1.2). Install failed, RCP Base Plug-in not found. What gives????
  • Fernando Cassia said on Aug 30, 2009 11:32 PM:

The problem I have with IBM software is a question of TRUST.

I saw IBM fail to properly market Lotus Smartsuite. I saw IBM letting OS/2 customers abandoned for a long time before releasing a decent office suite.

Then I saw IBM stop promoting Smartsuite, and letting Microsoft take over most of the market share.

Then I saw IBM/Lotus promoting a Java based office suite, "Lotus eSuite".

Then I saw Lotus quickly abandoning it.

Then I saw IBM/lotus missing the chance of OPEN SOURCING the code of Smartsuite, like Sun did (and GPL to boot!) after they purchased StarOffice, creating OpenOffice.

Then I saw IBM changing the names of its products every year or so, so you no longer know what product you´re talking about.

    HOW CAN I TRUST IBM??

@Tonnir, Alex Puente & other users met the "can't find RCP base plug-in" problem, could you please post the problem with your system information in the installation forum?

    and

    send the %tmp%\LotusInstall.log to iptcs@cn.ibm.com?

    Any answer for this?

  • TD Quinn said on Oct 8, 2009 10:37 PM:

I wont even try to upgrade my existing version based on all the problems above. The last lime I upgraded I just hoped it would work. Took me forever. IBM you need to make this easy or users will abandon the product and your effort to get in this market will be lost

  • RHill said on Nov 18, 2009 1:29 PM:

Had the RCP Base Plug-in not found problem. Checked support forums and found entry that indicates you need to uninstall the prior version before installing V1.3. Did this and the 1.3 install worked.
  • Francisco said on Feb 3, 2010 9:12 AM:

Tengo que probarlo y ver cómo funciona todo.
  • Philip Radtke said on Apr 3, 2010 1:31 PM:

I finally got 1.3 to install. I don't know what helped but

    I

    used disk cleanup.

uninstalled the old version using the uninstall found in the program directory. (it didn't show in the Programs and Features applet on the Control Panel.)

  • Matt said on Jun 9, 2010 8:24 AM:

what usually helps is to not update but clean install the application you want to install. as the updates ususally do not update the registry. So best uninstall file, reboot machine install new version. and that should resolve the issue.
  • Joseph said on Jun 15, 2010 9:17 AM:

regarding this error: GetStorage, name "No Content!

in my case, i deleted the folder at C:\Documents and Settings\(User Name)\IBM\Lotus\Symphony\.sodc
  • Shawn said on Dec 7, 2010 1:55 PM:

Thanks about deleting the .sodc. that worked for me
  • Rain said on Dec 22, 2010 7:19 AM:

Restarting the application or the PC alone won't work. But after deleting the .sodc folder, I can now open a Symphony document. Thanks for the fix!
