Lotus Symphony 3 Beta 4 is now available! Give it a try. Tell us what you think.

Lotus Symphony 3 Beta 4 represents a major new advancement for our Lotus Symphony users. Based on current OpenOffice.org 3 code stream. Lotus Symphony 3 Beta 4 offers loads of new features and capabilities and improved file fidelity. The Lotus Symphony team is excited to get it out to you and get your feedback.

Lotus Symphony 3 Beta 4 adds some exciting new enhancements. We've focused on performance. In addition we've enabled the support for adding additional spell check dictionaries into the product and added support for VML images.

We've done some additional work around installation to support a silent installation option for Windows. We've added some enhancements to the user experience like remembering file paths when you insert objects and some enhancements to the import data functions.

This is our last planned Beta so your feedback is really important to us.

So, download Lotus Symphony 3 Beta 4 today and try it out.

We do caution you though, as with all betas, there are still some kinks to work out before we're finished. So, please treat this as beta code and not production code. And, please take care to choose the right forum for support and feedback.

The wikipedia article about ibm lotus symphony

mentioned that there will an equation editor in

version 3.0. There is (still) no equation editor

    in this beta 4 release.

I downloaded latest version and when I tried to open a Lotus 123 file, I get an error message indicating the file type is not supported!

This must be an error. If this is really true, you have gone over to the dark side with Microsoft.

Great toolset for consultants. Zotero extension support for the academic target group would be nice. And a localized download page for the non English speaking users should be available just for demonstrating that IBM is really serious about bringing this software to the market.

Presentation still needs a few enhancements in the animation area. Movement overall could still be more fliud. A grow/shrink emphasis effect is sorely needed. A way to reverse direction of a motion path so object will land where you place it wuld also be an excellent feature to add in.

I really like it. All that is needed now from an academic perspective is a usable bibliography extension such as mendeley or, preferably, zotero. Until then I will have to stick with Word.

Well, Lotus Symphony 3 Beta 4 was downloaded a few minutes ago; and, it installed very smoothly without any hitch on computer running 64-Bit Windows 7.0. However, the disappointment was that after years of waiting there is still not that Economic Rate of Return (ERR) Functionality integrated into this Lotus Symphony 3.0 Beta 4.0 Spread Sheet Application similarly in the way in which the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) Functionality was integrated into the Spread Sheet Applications of both IBM's Lotus 1-2-3 and Microsoft's Excel.

    Regards.

first of all i am really glad that this will be THE LAST BETA, but despite of some notes in wiki that there will be an equation editor i am still looking for it. as a first impression it is fast enough (actually can not detect the difference with the previous beta). As a user from balcan peninsula i hope that there will be spell check for bulgarian in the next beta, sorry THE FINAL RELEASE.

I've installed this beta on Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit). I'm loving the GUI! It's really great and easy to use.

But the wohle program seems to be heavy loaded. It needs a while to load Symphony and then to start the word processing module. :(

There are also still some bugs. Please activate the drawings toolbar and open for example the menu with the symbols. How can I close this? It doesn't close when leaving and clicking somewhere else. I first have to minimize the window.

I have loved Lotus SmartSuite products over MS Office for a long time... started with Ami Pro on Win3.1

For a while, I had lost faith in IBM/Lotus since the Millenium addition had not been updated in like 10 yrs.

I then found out about Lotus Symphony thru a wiki article and have downloaded/installed v1.3 which CAN read in MOST SmartSuite formats. I believe that the decision to remove read-in capabilities from these older formats in the newer v3.x Symphony will be a mistake. At the very least, IBM/Lotus should make available some type of add-in/plug-in that will continue to read-in these old formats. People will have to save in new formats, but that's fine. When there's 10+ yrs of docs created in the other format, to drop them, is bad PR.

I may have missed it... but does IBM/Lotus have an upgrade path for Organizer users?

I have sold a number of my clients on Lotus Smart Suite in late 90's early 2000s.

    They love organizer, hate Outlook.

Do you have an upgrade path for them?

or should they switch to Microsoft now?

    Thanks.

Actually, i have version Smart Suite 9.5, installed and using for many years(more than 5).And of course have the archive of 123,12m,lwp0mwp files.

As i understood in my usage experience of a few days, Symphony can convert my Smart Suite files but does not let me save in the file format. Also this drives me to the position of learning spread sheet and word programming according to open office .As IBM bought Lotus years ago and knows every features of Lotus in programming and applications, why do they drive the users...

it cannot be true that you don't support your own file type 123 (ex lotus smartsuite..)
  • JRC Systems said on Sep 9, 2010 10:34 PM:

IBM/Lotus really needs to pull-out all of the stops + put back into the program (even as a plug-in/add-in) the ability to READ older .123, lwp, etc files.

If Symphony truly is the upgrade path for SmartSuite, IT NEEDS TO HAVE THIS.

If IBM/Lotus thinks that all registered SmartSuite users already know about Symphony,

+ had previously installed / upgraded to 1.3x, for the special-task of converting & re-saving

all of their old format documents in Open Office, they're dead wrong.

Someone in marketing failed to get the word out to 1000s customers.

With the conversion/upgrade capability out of Symphony, and when those 1000s of users finally find out about it, there won't be an upgrade path.

    Paddle anyone?

    I would like

    1. a way to make custom toolbars

    2. A reviewing (tracking) toolbar like MS word has

    3. A way to edit the default auto numbering list style so that when I for example type "1. something" and hit enter that when it automatically changes it to a list and creates "2. " then each level of the outline would be how I want it and not some default outline form that uses all Arabic Numerals (this feature, as far as I can tell, is not available in any of the major word processors including MS word)

It has great looks, and I love the tabs. That is the reason I downloaded it. Keep up the good work. I'm sure I'll have more ideas as I continue to use it is there a better place to post these?

As a teacher I have over 15 years of files and I have dragged my feet at moving to MS Office all these years because of the sheer number of hours it would take to convert. I love the properties window in Smartsuite and haven't found a replacement yet in Corel or MS products. I NEED a product that will run on newer OS's as I am getting tired of WordPro crashing if I ask it to print more than five copies of a collated, double-sided document! Since Symphony 3 doesn't support Smartsuite, I guess I'll keep waiting, wishing they would release the software so someone could update it. Hello, IBM. I am an original SmartSuite user and tried to hang on to it as long as I could before switching to MS Office out of necessity. I also used Symphony 1.3 for several months but it's slow and document conversion from Office to Symphony did not always get the expected results. I've also tried OpenOffice but it's just too slow for my liking. Now, I was hoping that Symphony 3 would be an improvement but when I tried one of the early beta version it did not show any compelling reason to be optimistic. I am simply giving up waiting because it's taking you soooo looooong to get to this point. How many months, maybe years, has it been? This is not the 80's or 90's where you can simply make people wait. (to be continued)
  • Benji said on Oct 10, 2010 10:29 AM:

(continued from previous post) The duration of time that this thing has been in beta is an eternity in today's business world. By the time you release this version for general availability, it's months or years out of date. Oh, and I seriously doubt that you are using the latest version of OpenOffice, which is already being abadoned for LibreOffice. Granted, this is freeware but you still need to do a better job with faster and more frequent update, better compaibility with the competitors, and backward comptibility with your own legacy products. Or you are going to be irrelevant, as usual.
  • Benji said on Oct 10, 2010 10:43 AM:

One more thing. The LibreOffice team is already promising to improve speed and compatibility. If that happpens, people will just use LibreOffice as is. The only remaining reason for Symphony would be compatibility with your own lagacy products. If you can't or won't do that then you should just quit.
  • Anton said on Oct 11, 2010 12:30 PM:

+1 for reinstating SmartSuite file support. .lwp file support was my main reason for installing Symphony 1.3 instead of OpenOffice. 3.0b4 looks better than 1.3 to me (it's visibly faster, and the properties I care about are more accessible), but I can't be using software that doesn't support 90% of my documents.

Without support for Lotus WordPro documents, Symphony is useless to us. We been hoping for an improved WordPro filter. Instead IBM / Lotus drops it?? We used ONLY IBM computers for year, until the sale to Lenovo. We've spent a small fortune on IBM OS's, software, and support. With thousands of accumulated documents ranging from invoices, to purchase orders and customer letters, we certainly expected, and still expect better treatment. I hope SOMEONE at IBM actually reads this forum, gives a damn, and does the right thing.
  • Not Quite there said on Oct 19, 2010 5:25 AM:

Have been playing with IBM symphony for a while now, but sadly I keep returning to Open Office.

Sure it's slower and it opens multiple windows instead of a nice tabbed interface but it does have a basic feature that all office software should have and symphony is sadly lacking: You should be able to select more than one file to open at a time.

Without this feature Symphony is sadly lacking in the office marketplace where opening several documents quickly and efficiently is a must. Once Symphony can open several files from the one open prompt I will gladly switch over to it and have the rest of the staff using it, but until that time OpenOffice will stay as the Office Suite of choice for me.

IBM really needs to wake up to the demands of both old and new alike. Give support and/or access to the old timers while bringing in the new. A "new" look just is not going to cut it when businesses need to get work done!

I can not use this "new" symphony to read "old" symphony files and that is a total discouragement right there. Meanwhile, I can read any version of my excel files with the "new". "Make it so" that I can read my old symphony (and other old Lotus 1-2-3) files and I might consider moving over the "new" symphony in lieu of Excel. Otherwise this is just another useless spreadsheet program in a huge market of spreadsheet programs. Supporting old file types would definitely be a good incentive for me!

Needs to read and write SmartSuite and, if possible, AmiPro files, for legacy users. Deleted Symphony and re-installed SmartSuite.

I have read requests for an equation editor on symphony forums / comments written in 2007.

Now, about 4 years later you still do not have it, I'd say you don't care about what users want.

It should be simple too, since it's actually in the OpenOffice Code, Symphony is based on.

I will not consider Lotus again, seeing how you don't seem to care at all.

When lotus symphony 3.0 does not support LWP-files, I have to work further with Lotus smart suite. But this old program does not run on Windows 7 home edition. Will Lotus smart suite run on Windows 7 professional in the XP modus? Has somebody tried this?

Es ist erstaunlich, dass sich IBM selbst nach so vielen Kommentaren für einen SmartSuite Importfilter, der ja schon vorhanden war, weigert, diesen Filter z. B ins letzte FP (3) zu integrieren.

Why writing comments, if IBM doesn't respect the meanings of the customers. A lot of people write that they would have again the suport for smartsuite-files and even in the lastest FP cou can't find it. I have the impression that they think it's a weakness to fulfill the desires of the symphony-users.

We have need for LWP and 123 support as 90% of our files are in these formats. At the minimum, being able to read in the older format and saving to a new format eg odt, would be a real life saver.

LibreOffice will, thankfully, now open most smartsuite documents. .123 and .lwp files are now much more easily convertible into ODF format.

Sorry, Lotus, you just lost us as customers.

My only interest in Symphony is to utilize my 123 files and to continue using 123. However, from what I've read on this site, surprisingly, Symphony doesn't accomplish this.

Amazing that it offers no support for earlier Lotus file types, such as WordPro .lwp. :-(

I give it zero starts. Uninstalled it immediately when it would not open my .lwp files.
