Dimagi is a privately held, for profit, social enterprise that develops mobile applications to help governments and international healthcare agencies bring basic healthcare services to developing countries and under-served populations. In 2011, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) collaborated with the National Heath Mission (NHM) in Uttar Pradesh, India to establish the Reducing Maternal and Newborn Deaths (ReMiND) project to improve the delivery of community-level prenatal and postnatal care and support services. CRS worked with Dimagi to develop a customized, mobile health (mHealth) application for the government's frontline health workers using Dimagi's open source mobile platform, CommCare.

Business need
Although Apache CouchDB™ met many technical requirements, it could not scale easily to support business and data growth with Dimagi's existing architecture. Performance issues were taking time from core development.

Dimagi selected IBM® Cloudant™ Dedicated Cluster as its new data layer, gaining a robust, high-performance, database-as-a-service solution, operating on an elastic and scalable global cloud.

Since its pilot deployment, the ReMiND project has successfully matured from an initial proof of concept to a scaled mobile tool for community health workers, yielding real-world, life-changing impact. Using IBM® Cloudant™, Dimagi now has the scalability to support a growing global user-base; eliminating database administration, enabling greater focus on core development; which enables care teams to access clinical data faster in the field for better healthcare outcomes.
