 Open Systems Migration
 |
| | |
| |
|
The IBM Open Systems Migration Appliance is a portable tool architected for online or "high-speed offline" movement of data between any storage subsystems supporting external SCSI, IP or Fibre Channel attachment.
|
|
Leverage existing infrastructures (SCSI, Fibre or IP) to transport data.
- No host reconfiguration required
- Host & Operating System agnostic
- Storage Vendor & Interface agnostic
- Minimal time to deploy
|
|
Data transfer is initiated and performed by the intelligent Migration Appliance
- No additional infrastructure required
- No host application impacts
- No host resource impacts
- Host Application Services can be fully available while the data transfer proceeds
In the offline standalone mode
, the appliance operates as a high-speed, high-bandwidth data pump, moving up to 3 TB/hour for as many as 10 servers simultaneously. Offline migration is beneficial for environments where there are many servers each with up to several hundred GB of data.
In the online concurrent mode
, "logical groupings" of servers are selected for migration activity. Data is migrated as a transparent background activity. The concurrent mode of data migration is recommended where there are few servers with very high quantities of data (multi-terabytes per server).

A proliferation of new storage technologies have arrived, and storage is demanding significant investment in today's IT infrastructures, calling for higher performance, scalable capacity, ease of management and greater return on investment (ROI).
This rapid pace of change makes data migration from old to new storage technologies an integral part of an IT infrastructure solution. A compelling reason to engage IBM's Data Migration services can be sourced from many areas; e.g. storage consolidation, redistribution of data, business continuity, and improved data management & backup processes.
Historically data migration has been a complex, time intensive operation typically requiring application servers to have extensive "outages" while data is moved from one storage system to another.
|
|
The IBM Open Systems Migration Appliance provides a simple way to migrate data between any storage systems which support industry standard interfaces. By transparently enabling concurrent data movement while applications are running, or by using the high-speed "offline data-pump" feature, valuable time and resources are saved and systems outages are reduced or eliminated. The IBM Migration Appliance provides a non-intrusive way of changing storage platforms without scheduling extended outages. Implementing this appliance in a SAN or with direct Fibre, SCSI or IP attachment is as simple as A B C.

|
Leverages Existing SAN The IBM Open Systems Migration Appliance is an ideal tool for cross-vendor storage system migration because it delivers real-time "transparent online or high-speed offline", movement of data between similar and dissimilar devices. This process supports storage upgrades, data center relocation, and server consolidation. And, since IBM's Open Systems Migration Appliance is operating system independent, it can be used to migrate data within your heterogeneous environment, significantly reducing your overall IT expenses.
Simple and Effective Design The IBM Open Systems Migration Appliance can be deployed quickly and efficiently. With IBM's Open Systems Migration Appliance, data transfer can be accomplished in minutes or hours rather than days or weeks.
Intelligent Appliance IBM Open Systems Migration Appliance runs on a dedicated SAN appliance, eliminating the need to deploy any additional infrastructure. Since the migration appliance runs independently of host servers, there is no performance impact on application servers while data is being migrated.
Supports Legacy, State of the Art and Future Storage Devices
IBM Open Systems Migration Appliance is an open-standards based appliance that has been designed to support legacy, state-of-the-art and future storage devices.
