Linux on IBM iSeries

Get flexibility and cost effectiveness at your fingertips

The IBM  eServer™ iSeries is an integrated business server. iSeries is reliable, scalable and recognised as one of the most flexible, easy to use systems in the industry. It has the ability to run multiple environments and can deploy new applications quickly.

  Server Consolidation

iSeries can consolidate several Linux servers making it far easier to manage your server farm and reduce costs. In fact, you can run up to 31 separate Linux environments on one single iSeries server.

  Resource optimisation

iSeries can share resources between OS/400 and Linux - it's called Logical Partitioning and it can help you dramatically reduce the cost of managing and supporting a heterogeneous environment. Logical Partitioning (LPAR) works by supporting the sharing of processors between OS/400 and Linux. LPAR also offers the Virtual Ethernet LAN facilities to support partition to partition communication. iSeries technology provides virtual I/O too. Virtual devices such as disk, tape, CD-ROM and DVD can be shared between multiple OS/400 and Linux partitions.

  Minimum investment

With shared processor and virtual I/O support there is a minimal hardware requirement for a Linux environment. This translates into a minimal investment to run Linux applications on iSeries.

  One Management System

iSeries provides Storage Area Network facilities for Linux partitions. It can add, move or delete disk space assigned to Linux - all under the protection of RAID. Moreover, iSeries can manage OS/400, Linux, and Windows 2000 disk space from one management system. A full OS/400 system backup can provide disaster recovery support for one or more Linux partitions; and daily backups performed by Linux support file level save/restore can utilise tape devices owned by OS/400.
