OS/390 consists of the base elements and optional features listed here. The base elements deliver essential operating system functions. When you order OS/390, you receive all of the base elements. The optional features are orderable with OS/390. They provide additional operating system function. Many of the optional features are priced; however, some are unpriced (free), as indicated below.

Base Control Program (BCP or MVS)
Base element: The BCP provides the essential operating system services of OS/390. It includes the I/O Control Program and the OS/390 UNIX System Services Kernel.

Bulk Data Transfer (BDT) provides the base services required by its features to transfer data from one system to another.

BDT File-to-File: BDT File-to-File allows users at one OS/390 system in a SNA network to copy data sets to or from another OS/390 system in the network. This feature is related to the element BDT.

BDT SNA NJE: BDT SNA NJE allows users to transmit jobs, output, commands, and messages from one computer to another within a SNA network. This feature is related to the element BDT.

BookManager BookServer: BookManager BookServer converts BookManager books to HTML for display through a web browser.

BookManager BUILD: BookManager BUILD creates online books to be used by BookManager READ. This feature supports dynamic enablement.

BookManager READ: BookManager READ displays, searches, and manages on-line books and bookshelves that were created by BookManger BUILD.

C/C++ IBM Open Class Library: C/C++ IBM Open Class Library provides a set of C/C++ class libraries.

C/C++ without Debug Tool: This feature is the same as the C/C++ with Debug Tool feature except that it does not have the Debug Tool component.

Cryptographic Services

Cryptography is the transformation of data to conceal its meaning. In OS/390, the base element Cryptographic Services provides the following base cryptographic functions: data secrecy, data integrity, personal identification, digital signatures, and management of cryptographic keys.

DCE Application Support: DCE Application Support facilitates the interaction between DCE clients and CICS or IMS regions.

DCE Base Services: DCE Base Services (OSF DCE level 1.1) provides services for developing and running client/server applications, including remote procedure call, directory, security, and distributed time services.

DFSMSdfp: DFSMSdfp provides storage, data, program, and device management functions.

DFSMSdss: DFSMSdss is a DASD data and space management tool.

DFSMShsm: DFSMShsm is a DASD storage management and productivity tool for a managing low-activity and inactive data.

DFSMSrmm: DFSMSrmm helps you manage your removable media as one enterprise-wide library across systems that can share DASD.

DFSORT: DFSORT sorts, merges, and copies data.

Distributed File Service: Distributed File Service support provides the file serving component of OSF DCE. Independent of DCE, it also provides SMB file and print serving support for Windows clients and SMB file serving support for OS/2 clients.

Encina Toolkit Executive: Encina Toolkit Executive provides a set of tools for developing client components of distributed transactional applications.

EREP: The Environmental Record Editing and Printing Program (EREP) edits and prints reports for the records placed in the error recording data set (ERDS), helping IBM service representatives fix problems.

ESCON Director Support: ESCON Director Support enables the reporting of ESCON director device errors to OS/390.

FFST: FFST provides immediate notification and first failure data capture for software events.

GDDM: GDDM provides graphical presentation services and device driving capability.

GDDM-PGF: GDDM-Presentation Graphics Feature (PGF) is a set of programs for creating presentation material in a variety of styles.

GDDM-REXX: GDDM-REXX is a productivity tool that enables programmers to prototype GDDM applications and to create small routines and utility programs quickly and easily.

Hardware Configuration Definition (HCD): HCD defines both the operating system configuration and the processor hardware configuration for a system.

Hardware Configuration Manager (HCM): HCM is a PWS-based client/server interface to the base element HCD.

High Level Assembler (HLASM): HLASM integrates almost all of the functions of past assemblers and provides extensions and improvements.

HLASM Toolkit: HLASM Toolkit provides tools to improve application development, debugging, and recovery.

IBM Communications Server

IBM Communications Server supports secure TCP/IP, SNA, and UNIX networking throughout an enterprise. It gives you the ability to connect subsystems and applications to each other and to connect network devices.

IBM Communications Server consists of TCP/IP and SNA functions.

Optional features that provide varying levels of security over public and private networks are available.

IBM Communications Server NPF: IBM Communications Server NPF provides a printing function that reroutes print data to the IP network.

IBM Communications Server Security Level 1: IBM Communications Server Security Level 1 provides authentication and security services in a TCP/IP network environment. It provides support for packet filtering, tunnels, and network address translation (NAT), which enables secure communication over private and public networks. Of the three IBM Communications Server security features, this one provides the least security.

IBM Communications Server Security Level 2: As with the other two IBM Communications Server security features, this feature provides authentication and security services in a TCP/IP network environment, supporting packet filtering, tunnels, and NAT. The difference is that it provides greater security than IBM Communications Server Security Level 1 (but less than IBM Communications ServerSecurity Level 3).

IBM Communications Server Security Level 3: As with the other two IBM Communications Server security features, this feature provides authentication and security services in a TCP/IP network environment, supporting packet filtering, tunnels, and NAT. The difference is that it provides the highest level of security.

IBM HTTP Server: The IBM HTTP Server provides for scaleable, high performance Web serving for critical e-business applications. It is exclusive to OS/390. This element was previously known as a base element of OS/390 under the names Lotus Domino Go, the Internet Connection Secure Server (ICSS) and the Internet Connection Server (ICS).

IBM HTTP Server NA Secure: IBM Server NA Secure includes Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), Proxy Authentication, and a repository for home pages. It supports multiple IP addresses and double-byte character set.

ICKDSF: The Device Support Facility (ICKDSF) enables you to perform functions needed for the installation and use of IBM DASD.

Infoprint Server: Infoprint Server allows you to print files on OS/390 printers from any workstation that has TCP/IP access. This feature was called OS/390 Print Server when it first became part of OS/390 in R5. In OS/390 R8, it received its current name.

ISPF: ISPF is a full-screen editor and dialogue manager.

JES2: JES2 accepts the submission of work for the BCP, and exercises independent control over its job processing.

JES3: JES3 accepts the submission of work for the BCP, and exercises centralized control over its job processing.

LAN Server: LAN Server lets LAN workstation users store and share data and applications in a central location on a S/390, which allows the large storage capacity of an S/390 to relieve the capacity constraints of workstation-based servers.

LAN Server is being removed from OS/390 because the prerequisite OS/2 software is no longer available. OS/390 V2R10 has only the host component. OS/390 V2R9 was the last release to include both the workstation (on diskettes) and host components. After OS/390 V2R10, neither component will be available. OS/390 V2R10 still supports the OS/2 Front End Processor configurations from previous releases of LAN Server.

LANRES: LANRES integrates NetWare LANs and System/390 environments. Included with LANRES are diskettes that you use to install LANRES code on the Novell NetWare Server.

MICR/OCR: MICR/OCR provides the device support code for various magnetic and optical devices.

Network File System (NFS): Network File System acts as a file server to workstations, personal computers, or other authorized systems in a TCP/IP network.

OCSF Security Level 3: OCSF Security Level 3, in conjunction with base element Cryptographic Services, provides weak (40-bit) and strong (56-bit and greater) software cryptographic services, a data library service provider, certificate library service providers, trust policy service providers, and hardware cryptographic services.

OS/390 UNIX System Services: OS/390 UNIX System Services provides the standard command interface to familiar and interactive UNIX users.

OSA Support Facility (OSA/SF): Open Systems Adapter (OSA) Support Facility customizes the modes and port parameters of an OSA-2, which provides S/390 network connectivity directly to LANs and WANs that support IP and SNA protocols.

3270 PC File Transfer Program: The 3270 PC File Transfer Program transfers files from the host to the workstation for off-line data manipulation, updating or correction.

RMF: Resource Measurement Facility (RMF) is an optional feature. It gathers data about OS/390 resource usage and provides reports at any system in a sysplex.

SDSF: System Display and Search Facility (SDSF) provides information to monitor, manage, and control your OS/390 system.

SecureWay Security Server: SecureWay Security Server is an optional feature of OS/390 and lets you control access to protected resources. It consists of these components: RACF, DCE Security Server, LDAP Server, Network Authentication Services, Open Cryptographic Enhanced Plug-ins (OCEP), and Firewall Technologies.

SMP/E: SMP/E is a tool for installing and maintaining software, and for managing the inventory of software that has been installed.

SOMobjects ADE: SOMobjects Application Development Environment (ADE) provides a SOM compiler and source code for the SOM kernel (root) classes, Interface Repository Framework, and emitter Framework.

SOMobjects RTL: SOMobjects is a technology that allows applications written in different programming languages to use the same object-oriented class libraries. The base element SOMobjects Runtime Library (RTL) is a set of functions for creating objects and invoking methods on them.

System SSL Security Level 3

System Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Security Level 3 provides privacy between a client and a server through use of the SSL protocol and greater-than-40-bit user data cryptography.

The availability of this feature outside the United States is subject to United States export regulations.

Text Search

TIOC: TIOC allows console services and TSO/E communication with the terminal hardware.

Tivoli Management Framework: Tivoli Management Framework allows OS/390 to be managed by the Tivoli framework-based applications that support OS/390.

TSO/E: Time Sharing Option/Extensions (TSO/E) provides for an interactive terminal interface.

OS/390 UNIX System Services: OS/390 UNIX System Services provides the standard command interface to familiar and interactive UNIX users.
