History of VSE

z/VSE is designed to help provide robust, cost-effective solutions for customers with a wide range of capacity needs, in most industries, worldwide. z/VSE is built on a heritage of ongoing refinement and innovation that spans four decades. It brings the value of innovative IBM System z and IBM System Storage technology to VSE clients.

z/VSE V4.1 is available

IBM System z10 Enterprise Class

IBM announced the IBM System z10 EC on 2/26/2008. The System z10 EC is built on the inherent strengths of the IBM System z platform. The System z10 EC is supported by z/VSE V3.1 and z/VSE 4. The new OSA-Express3 10 GbE LR adapter is supported by z/VSE V3.1 and later. z/VSE V4.1 supports selected CPACF enhancements, including AES 192 and 256 assist. z/VSE V4.1 systems running on the System z10 EC server are eligible for MWLC pricing.

The System z10 EC (with a wide choice of subcapacity models) may be of interest to customers needing additional power for their z/VSE and/or Linux on System z workloads. The z10 EC may also appeal to larger enterprises who want to consolidate both z/OS and z/VSE workloads onto a single server .

Before migrating your z/VSE system to the z10 EC server, please order the PSP bucket for device 2097.

IBM DB2 Server for VSE and VM V7.5 is available

IBM DB2 Server for VSE and VM V7.5 provides the basis for robust  z/VSE solutions as well as enhanced interoperability between z/VSE and distributed platforms such as Linux on System z running applications including DB2 and  WebSphere.

With the new DB2 Runtime only Client editions, you can purchase and use only the DB2 client, without having to pay for the database server. The Client Edition comes with some enhanced features and improved performance to help integrate z/VSE and Linux on System z.

For more information, please see the announcement letter dated November 14, 2007.

Encryption Facility for z/VSE

Encryption Facility for z/VSE (EF for z/VSE) V1.1 is designed to exploit the powerful encryption capabilities of IBM System z to help you securely and efficiently protect data.  EF for z/VSE is an optional, priced feature of VSE Central Functions V8 (z/VSE V4) and is eligible for MWLC pricing. The data format of EF for z/VSE V1.1 is compatible with Encryption Facility for z/OS V1.1 or later.

EF for z/VSE requires CP Assist for Cryptographic Function (CPACF), an optional, no-charge feature of System z9 EC, z9 BC, z990, and z890 servers. EF for z/VSE gives customers another encryption option and complements z/VSE support for the IBM TS1120 encrypting tape drives. The TS1120 is the preferred solution for high volume backup/archive applications. EF for z/VSE is designed to allow secure exchange of encrypted data with other locations within your company, business partners, suppliers, and customers.

For more information, please see the Encryption Facility for z/VSE Announcement letter.

 Live Virtual Classes (LVC)

Additional LVC classes are planned, however none are scheduled at this time.
