Support for PAV is now available |
Parallel Access Volume (PAV) is an optional licensed feature of the IBM System Storage DS8000 and DS6000, and IBM TotalStorage ESS series. It enables a single System z server to simultaneously process multiple I/O operations to the same volume. This can help significantly reduce device queue delays and provide enhanced throughput. Concurrent processing of I/O operations is achieved by defining multiple logical addressees per physical volume (so-called "base" and "alias" volumes). The PAV configuration must be done both in the DS8000, DS6000, or ESS and the System z server.
PAV enables multiple jobs within a single z/VSE image to transfer data to or from the same physical volume in parallel. When accessing a volume with PAV support active, read operations are executed simultaneously as well as write operations to different extents on the volume. With PAV support, applications may benefit from a performance improvement when using I/O processing in different VSE tasks.
PAV support is now available in z/VSE V4.2 with APAR DY46953/PTF UD53399 (01C) and UD53400 (01J).

In addition to function delivered earlier, z/VSE V4.2 now offers:
- Encryption Facility for z/VSE V1.2 as an optional, priced feature of VSE Central Functions V8.
- EF for z/VSE V1.2 adds support for the OpenPGP format and is designed to offer more flexibility for security-rich exchange of data with business partners.
- New optional products:
- IBM Rational COBOL Runtime for z/VSE V7.5 is designed to execute applications developed with the Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) capability of Rational Business Developer.
- IBM WebSphere MQ for z/VSE V3.0 is a replacement for MQ Series for VSE/ESA™ V2.1.2. It is designed to provide improved interoperability on both distributed and mainframe platforms as well as performance enhancements.
Note: Support for IBM System Storage DS8000 FlashCopy SE (Space Efficient) is available with the general availability of z/VSE V4.2.
z/VSE V4.2 is the preferred follow-on z/VSE product for clients with z/VSE V4.1, z/VSE V3, and VSE/ESA installed. z/VSE V4.2 is eligible for MWLC pricing with full-capacity and sub-capacity options on z10 and z9 servers.
For more information, please see the announcement letter.
z/VSE V4.2 is planned to be the last release to offer CICS/VSE V2.3.
Beginning with VSE/ESA V2.4 (June 1999), IBM has delivered CICS/VSE V2.3 together with CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA V1.1 (CICS TS VSE/ESA) at no additional charge. This "coexistence" packaging continues with z/VSE V4.2. However, CICS/VSE and DL/I V1.10 will not be included in any future version or release of z/VSE.

Distribution Media Change |
z/VSE V4.2 is no longer delivered on a 3480 tape cartridge.
Depending on the order, z/VSE Version 4 Release 2 will be packaged and delivered either:
- On three tape cartridges (of type 3590 or 3592)
- On CD-ROM
- Through electronic delivery (via ShopzSeries) to be downloaded.
On System z processors (z800, z890, z900, z990, z9, z10) as well as MP3000 the CD-ROM option should provide a viable alternative (via the HW service console), at least for those installations where a previously installed VSE system is present.
You can find the installation instructions for CD ROM provided files on the VSE homepage under documentation.

Encryption Facility for z/VSE Version 1 Release 2 |
Encryption Facility for z/VSE (EF for z/VSE) is an optional, priced feature of VSE Central Functions Version 8. It is a host-based software solution designed to encrypt sensitive data before transferring it to tape for archival purposes, or to exchange with remote locations or business partners. In addition to writing encrypted data to tape, EF for z/VSE can be used to produce encrypted data written to disk and other removable media.
With Release 2, EF for z/VSE has been enhanced to support the OpenPGP standard. OpenPGP is a standard protocol for ensuring the integrity of data that can be exchanged between trusted partners. OpenPGP support is designed to offer even more choice and flexibility for exchanging data with business partners. For example, it does not require that your business partners purchase new storage hardware, have a mainframe, or run z/VSE.

IBM Rational COBOL Runtime for z/VSE V7.5 |
IBM Rational Business Developer is the newest, most productive way to create applications that support a variety of platforms. It is based on open, industry standard Eclipse technology. The Rational development environment is typically a workstation with Windows or Linux. It provides a common, integrated development environment that can create application solutions for most of the platforms within your enterprise. Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) applications created by Rational Business Developer can be targeted to run on z/VSE as well as other common production platforms such as z/OS, Linux, AIX, i5/OS, Windows, etc.
Rational COBOL Runtime for z/VSE V7.5 enables z/VSE customers to develop new applications using modern EGL technology. For example, customers with both z/VSE and Linux for System z can use the same development environment to support both platforms. They may be able to substantially reduce unique skills and training needed to support each environment. In addition, Rational Business Developer helps protect the investment of existing IBM VisualAge Generator users. Clients may be able to reuse and extend valuable existing IT assets, including automated conversion of VisualAge Generator applications to EGL.
Using the new extension to Rational Business Developer, COBOL code can be generated and deployed in z/VSE as:
- Traditional 3270 CICS® applications,
- Traditional batch applications,
- Application programs capable of being invoked from an EGL Web or Web 2.0 front-end, or from an EGL service on a distributed application server.
Rational COBOL Runtime for z/VSE 7.5 is the replacement for VisualAge Generator Server V1.2.
