The objectives of z/OS Systems Management (SM) are to make z/OS easier to use, to increase business application availability, and to reduce skill requirements and costs.

z/OS Systems Management tries to minimize IT management issues by:

  • Eliminating the need to take management actions
  • Automating as many management actions as possible
  • Providing easy to use and intuitive management applications that handle anything else that has not been automated or eliminated
  • Providing integrated and end-to-end management solutions

The IBM autonomic computing initiative will help customers reduce the cost and complexity of their e-business infrastructures, and overcome the challenges of systems management using systems that self-optimize, self-configure, self-heal and self-protect. zSeries plays a major role in the IBM autonomic computing initiative, since self-management capabilities available for zSeries will function as a model for other IBM servers. z/OS V1R2 provides the following functions to address the goals of the IBM autonomic computing initiative.
