z/OS can handle unpredictable workloads and allows high CPU and I/O utilization while still meeting response goals with minimal human intervention for setup and operation.
Workload management and automation on z/OS has achieved a very high degree of automation and can utilize otherwise lost system resources in a mixed workload environment.
z/OS supports installation set policies to ensure that each different workload obtains the resources appropriate to its priority. Management for z/OS is highly automated, including the scheduling of workloads, resource allocations, and responding to potential and major errors.
z/OS has a lead in the industry because of its ability to get the job done, on-time, day after day, year after year, decade after decade. No other system can match the S/390 track record. At the same time z/OS has evolved with a compatible architecture for over 30 years.
Previous application investments have always been protected. And they always will be, even while zSeries grows to keep pace with customer needs. z/OS starts a major ease-of-manageability initiative with the introduction of Managed System Infrastructure for Setup (msys for Setup) as a new base element. msys for Setup offers a new approach for installing and configuring z/OS components and products, resulting in significant productivity improvements.
msys for Operations will simplify the day-to-day operation of z/OS Parallel Sysplex clusters. By automating typical operator tasks and events in a Parallel Sysplex. It will reduce operations complexity and improve system recoverability, enhancing the availability of Parallel Sysplex clusters. Distinct displays of relevant information will allow greater operational awareness allowing you to be able to easily manage all the systems in a Parallel Sysplex, coupling facilities and their structures, as well as couple data sets.
z/OS Resource Measurement Facility (RMF) is the window on z/OS resource usage. Information is gathered at the Parallel Sysplex environment, single system or address-space level and reports are available at any system in a Parallel Sysplex environment. Real time performance monitoring is handled by Performance Monitor (PM).
The unique and rich functions of System Automation for OS/390 (SA OS/390) Version 2.1 can ease OS/390 management, reduce costs, and increase application availability. SA OS/390 automates I/O, processor, and system operations and includes "canned" automation for IMS, CICS, Tivoli OPC, and DB2. Its focus is on Parallel Sysplex automation, including multi- and single-system configurations, and on integration with end-to-end Tivoli enterprise solutions.
