COBOL for MVS and Language Environment for MVS

Advanced Programming Course

Learn how to use the new features of COBOL OS/390 and Language Environment OS/390!

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Teach existing COBOL programmers how to take advantage of new COBOL programming structures and capabilities. Upon completion of this course you should understand how to use the features of COBOL: Intrinsic functions, callable services, using callable services to handle 2-digit year and century 1900 or 2000, new compiler options, new run-time options, new use of the inspect statement, new scope terminators, changes required for CICS coding with COBOL for MVS as well as understand the programming considerations in a 31-bit environment. Migration of existing programs, differences in execution, executing in a mixed environment, and new application opportunities are all addressed in this course. Special customized laboratory exercises are utilized to reinforce the lecture material.

COURSE TOPICS:

* Introduction to new language structures available with COBOL OS/390 and the Language Environment run-time environment
* Language elements which must be changed in existing programs to convert them to the new COBOL
* New programming opportunities due to new COBOL size capabilities (tables up to 16MB)
* Intrinsic functions
* Managing the "Year 2000" problem with COBOL OS/390 and LE OS/390 callable routines
* Language Environment Models
* LE Callable routines for COBOL application programmers
* Issues related to 31-bit addressing
* Issues of mixing existing "old" COBOL programs and new COBOL programs
* Structured programming with COBOL using in-line PERFORMS, Case statements, scope terminators
* Debugging with COBOL OS/390 and Language Environment OS/390
* COMPILE and RUN-TIME options and their effect on abend information
* Using the COMPILER output as a debugging tool
* CODE/370 and the mainframe DEBUG TOOL (introduction only)

WHY SHOULD YOU TAKE THIS COURSE?

COBOL OS/390 introduces many new programming structures and capabilities. Understanding how to use these new functions as well as understanding the new run-time environment features are critical to successful application enablement using COBOL for MVS. Anyone planning to migrate to the COBOL OS/390 and LE OS/390 environment should plan to take this course.
