24 October 2008: News and info for community running SAP on DB2 on IBM System z

Dear SAP on DB2 on IBM System z community,

I just wanted to pass on new information about SAP on System z. My special thanks to the colleagues who send me information to keep you all informed, this time especially to Mike Zazulak, Bob Wolf, and Johannes Schuetzner.

  • SAP note 81737 updated - find the latest required service level in this SAP note.

The latest additions to 81737 were:

    • service level 0807 is required for DB2 9 now
    • several DB2 APARs have been added
    • OA25825: applying to a HiperDispatch=NO environment with zAAP/zIIP processors (performance)
  • A number of customers have been waiting for this eagerly:

DB2 Connect 9.5 and the new seamless and cascaded JDBC Failover from SAP are available now!
Find details on DB2 Connect 9.5 (FP1 SB) at: https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/db2
How to use seamless and cascaded JDBC Failover is described in SAP note 1085521.

  • Enterprise Portal - Disabling Portal Access Statistics
Recommendation that customers disable collection of the subject statistic.
Portal Access Statistics is a KM service that provides information on when users accessed resources. The information collected by the access statistics service is used to generate a read flag for documents that indicates if the user has already viewed them. The read flag is displayed in the properties dialog box for the document in question. If the user has already read the document, the date and time of the last read access are also displayed.

This can be configured under Portal – System Administration – System Configuration – Content Management – Repository services.

One of our customers experienced a hang situation brought on by a sudden increase of Java threads each trying to update a table. An SAP expert found that the Java threads were hanging around as long as 45 seconds trying to update a table with the statistics. This caused exhaustion in the DB2 for z/OS EDM pool.

Since collecting this info was disabled, the affected SAP system has been running smoothly. Logins to the SAP system are also faster.

  • New version: IBM CommonStore for SAP, V8.4 adds all new support for ILM from SAP retention management
As you may already know, IBM CommonStore for SAP is one of two offerings from IBM that offers SAP Certified advanced archiving capabilities that help SAP users run their businesses more effiiciently. The other IBM offering is called IBM FileNet. This latest release of IBM CommonStore for SAP provides support for SAP ILM (Information Lifecycle Management) module and WebDAV (BC-ILM 2.0). CommonStore for SAP V8.4 in conjunction with the IBM Data Retention 550 can provide a very strong SAP archiving capability.

There's a lot more detail in the announcement letter that you can find at: http://www.ibm.com/vrm/newsletter_10577 _3583_88625_email_DYN_1IN/ywfew22138524

23 August 2008: SAP note 81737 updated - DB2 9: PK70057 (reorganize tablespaces)

Dear SAP on DB2 on IBM System z community,

SAP note 81737 has been updated (current version as of today 690):

  • for DB2 V8 service level 0806 is required now.
  • Several APARs have been added
  • DB2 V7 APARs have been removed from 81737 since this version is no longer in maintenance.

It is always recommended to have the latest service level installed, as specified in SAP note 81737. SAP note 81737 should be reviewed on a regular basis to learn about the latest required service level.

Users of DB2 9 should be aware of APAR PK70057:

ABND=04E-00E20030, M=(N),C=910.UTIL-UTILINIT,M=DSNTFRCV,LOC=DSNSLD4 .DSNSVSGM+0F1A

Reorganizing tablespaces for which columns were added before DB2 9 and that were afterwards not reorganized before migrating to DB2 9 can result in DB2 abends. As a workaround, such tablespaces should not be reorganized before a fix is available. An APAR fix is currently being worked on.

07 August 2008: DB2 9: PK69427 - MODIFY RECOVERY AGE n will set COPY PENDING for tablespaces defined with DEFINE NO

Dear SAP on DB2 on IBM System z community,

Users of DB2 9 should be aware of APAR PK69427:

MODIFY RECOVERY AGE n will set COPY PENDING for
tablespaces which are defined with DEFINE NO
and where sysibm.systablepart.space = -1
(underlying VSAM pageset does not exist).

LOCAL FIX: start db(name) tsname(name9 access(force)

A workaround is available, and the APAR fix is currently being tested, and planned to become available on Friday.

09 May 2008: News for community running SAP applications on DB2 for z/OS on System z

Dear SAP on System z community,

We always recommend to have the latest service level installed, as specified in SAP note 81737. The current version of SAP note 81737 is 682. This SAP note should be reviewed on a regular basis to learn about the latest required service level.

Please take special notice of APAR PK59139, which was included in 81737 recently: performance problems with long running processing of IFCID316 generation logic have been experienced.

Here is the APAR description:

PK59139
   Release 810 : UK35572 available 08/05/06
   Release 910 : UK35573 available 08/05/06

**************************************************************
ERROR DESCRIPTION:
Performance on Long Running srbs in dsnveus2 griding through
dsnxecst prepared statement cache sorting entries and generati
logic on ifcid 316, 317 statistic tracing causing v8 slowdown
in executing the code due to increased blocks.
**************************************************************
USERS AFFECTED: V8 and V9 DB2 users running with dynamic
statement caching enabled and using IFCID
                0316 with WQALFLTR of 01.
**************************************************************
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Long running processing of IFCID316
generation logic. In V8, this may
manifest as an LPAR removed from the
                     sysplex.
**************************************************************
RECOMMENDATION:
**************************************************************
DB2 code sorts the IFCID 316 trace information when WQALFLTR
óf 01 is used. Due to longer field names introduced in DB2 V8,
existing code took substantial time to filter the information
for very large statement caches before it could complete.
In V8, a customer reported an LPAR being removed from the
sysplex due to the SRB not being pre-emptable and not
communicating before the processing was completed.
In v9, customers have complained about IFCID0316 processing
taking long amounts of time.

PROBLEM CONCLUSION:
This apar provides improved code optimization such that the
trace code does not take as long to write when using WQALFLTR
of 01 and will complete sooner.
Additional keyword: sqldynstmtcache

IFCID 16 with WQALFLTR of x'01' is used to get the DCS

03 Mar 2008: Latest news about running SAP applications on DB2 for z/OS on IBM System z

Let me give you an update on the latest news about running SAP applications on IBM DB2 for z/OS on System z:

SAP Note 81737 - current version is 671:

The latest update is a DB2 APAR for all DB2 V8 and V9 users, with a problem reported by several customers:

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: ABND=04E-00E70005 at DSNXGRDS.DSNXEDS1:m175
on PREPARE of a dynamic SQL.

This APAR is applicable when authorization IDs used to prepare dynamic SQL statements have one or more blanks at the end. These blanks caused DB2 to perform incorrect comparisons of the authorization IDs in the prepare path, leading to the reported abend.

PTF list:
     Release 8: UK32982 available 08/01/31
     Release 9: UK32983 available 08/01/31
