IBM Posts JZOS Toolkit by Dovetailed Technologies on alphaWorks Web Site to Help Extend Java Applications Running on z/OS on Mainframes

ARMONK, N.Y. - February 14, 2006 - IBM announced today its purchase of the JZOS batch technology developed by Dovetailed Technologies, LLC. The JZOS toolkit, which provides a simple, easy-to-use facility for running Java batch applications on the IBM mainframe flagship operating system, z/OS, is now available as a complimentary download on IBM alphaWorks.

"As our z/OS customers increasingly rely on Java underlying their business applications, IBM intends to provide enhanced Java access and Java tools," said Marianne Mostachetti, director of software, IBM System z. "IBM has been delivering Java products on z/OS for over eight years, and we see the addition of JZOS as strengthening our Java portfolio, building on the success of the zAAP engine."

IBM intends to integrate JZOS technology into its SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition products in 2006. The existing technology is available now at no charge at alphaWorks.

"Because z/OS batch subsystems are the lifeblood of many enterprises, businesses demand that Java integrates seamlessly with their z/OS environments," said Kirk Wolf, of Dovetailed Technologies, LLC. "The JZOS community has played a crucial role in shaping the batch toolkit to meet these requirements."

Steve Goetze of Dovetailed Technologies added, "IBM's acquisition of this technology illustrates its strong commitment to z/OS batch Java, and to this community. We look forward to working with IBM to continue to position Java as a critical application environment on z/OS."

JZOS is a set of tools designed to enhance the Java batch capabilities on z/OS. It includes a native launcher for running Java applications directly as batch jobs or started tasks and a set of Java methods intended to make access to traditional z/OS data and key system services directly available from Java applications. These enhancements may help facilitate bridging to the skills of traditional mainframe programmers who wish to run Java applications in batch.

The System z Application Assist Processors (zAAP) engines are specialized processors providing a strategic Java™ execution environment, which can enable clients to integrate and run new Java-based web applications alongside core z/OS business applications and backend database systems, and are designed to help lower the overall cost of computing for running Java technology-based workloads on the platform.

alphaWorks provides emerging technologies to early adopters and developers around the world. The Web site provides developers with access to the latest innovations from development labs and IBM Research.
