IBM Developer Kit for OS/390, Java 2 Technology Edition, SDK 1.3.1

This product is the OS/390 Java product that supplies the Java 1.3.1 APIs. It became generally available in July, 2000 and is periodically updated with cumulative service and improvements.

The Java 2 Technology Edition, SDK1.3.1 requires either:

• z/OS Verson 1 Release 1 or above
• z/OS.e Version 1 Release 3 or above

Note: IBM Developer Kit for OS/390, Java 2 Technology Edition
is now out of service as of September 30, 2007. The SDK 1.3.1 product information will move to archive by year end.

The SMP/E installable product is no longer be orderable though SMP/E PTFs and service will still be available. The non-SMP/E version will still be downloadable from this website. See the withdrawal from marketing announcement.

Compatibility:
Java applications with JNI routines or middleware using the z/OS XPlink linkage conventions or otherwise setting up an LE XPLINK environment must use the SDK1.4 Java product (IBM SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition), not the SDK1.3 product (IBM Developer Kit for OS/390, Java 2 Technology Edition), when executing.

More specifically, Java applications with JNI routines or middleware creating a JVM using the z/OS XPLink linkage conventions are not supported executing with the SDK1.3 product. In addition specifying the LE runtime option XPLINK(ON) and creating a LE XPLINK environment is also not supported in SDK 1.3.

Middleware or Java applications intended to support both SDK 1.3 and SDK 1.4 need to be built using SDK 1.3. Middleware or Java applications intended to support only SDK1.4 may be built with either SDK1.3 or SDK1.4.

Getting the Product

The non-SMP/E installable format of the code is available only from the web
You can download the non-SMP/E format of the code (the latest *.PAX.Z file) from the web.

The SMP/E installable format of the code is available by ordering it or by downloading it form the web:

Ordering the SMP/E installable code

• You can order the SMP/E installable format by calling IBM at 1-800-426-2255 or go to ShopzSeries
  You will need your customer number and you will need to refer to product number 5655-D35. ShopzSeries is available in the U.S. and several countries in Europe
• In countries where ShopzSeries is not available yet, contact your IBM representative (or Business Partner) to handle your order via the traditional IBM ordering process
• Alternatively, IBM Java for OS/390 can be obtained through a z/OS ServerPac or CBPDO, which can be ordered through the Internet (where available) or through the traditional ordering process

Downloading the SMP/E installable code from the Web

• If you are a new user, you will have to:
  1. Download the HJVA130.PAXBALL.Z and the latest *.PTF.Z file
  2. Using a binary transfer, move the SMP/E base code and the latest SMP/E PTF to the corresponding z/OS data sets on your z/OS system. See the target data set attributes
  3. Get the GETB131 exec on your z/OS system. This can be done by copying text from the GETB131 exec window.
  4. Save the exec to your z/OS system. GETB131 will allocate the data sets needed for the SMP/E install of the downloaded code
  5. Run the GETB131 exec on your z/OS system using the following command:

     EXEC GETB131.EXEC EXEC
     

  6. Run the SMP/E jobs to install the base code and PTF.The Program Directory contains installation instructions
  7. Verify the install

• If you are an existing SMP/E user and want the latest SMP/E PTF, you will have to:
  1. Download the latest *.PTF.Z file
  2. Using a binary transfer, move the latest SMP/E PTF to corresponding z/OS data sets on your z/OS system. Be sure to see the target data set attributes
  3. Run the SMP/E jobs to install the PTF. See the Program Directory for installation instruction
  4. Verify the install
