Known problems in the May and June 2002 collections

  PDF index file empty

Collections affected: z/OS Software Products, SK3T-4270-05

One of the PDF index files, PDFINDEX.HTM, is empty on the z/OS Software Products Collection. The file containing the text format of the PDF index, PDFINDEX.TEXT, is correct and available for your use. PDFINDEX.HTM will be corrected on the next edition of the collection.

If you want a copy of the PDFINDEX.HTM file for the June edition, contact dreslert@us.ibm.com.

Problems reading books that contain large tables with Softcopy Reader

Collections affected: VM Collection, SK2T-2067-20

If you use the IBM Softcopy Reader to try to read a section of a BookManager book that contains a large table, it might take a long time for Softcopy Reader to display the table, or Softcopy Reader might freeze. The problem occurs with Softcopy Reader Version 2.3.5, and with earlier versions.

We have fixed this problem in Softcopy Reader Version 2.3.6, which can be downloaded from http://www.ibm.com/software/office/bkmgr/softcopyread.html, and which is included on the June 2002 collections. The updated Softcopy Reader was not available in time to include on the May 2002 edition of the VM Collection. Until you are able to install the updated reader, here are some suggested work-arounds:

  • If a PDF version of the book is available, use the PDF version to read the problem section of the book.
  • Use the IBM Library Reader to read the problem section of the BookManager book. The Library Reader is no longer supported, but is available as-is on the Web at http://www.ibm.com/software/office/bkmgr/ilr.html.

  Problems opening PDF files

Collections affected: All collections

You might experience difficulties viewing PDF files depending on the level of your Adobe Acrobat Reader and your Windows platform. In some cases the file does not display, while in others you get a message that the file is being repaired and then it displays. If you have problems, try using a different level of the Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can install an Adobe Acrobat Reader from the collection, or you can download one from the Adobe Web site.

If you are having trouble viewing a PDF file on a CD or the Internet, try downloading the file and viewing it from your hard drive.

 Cross-book linking for older books

Collections affected: All collections

Cross-book links might not work from old, unchanged books to more recent books. Many bookshelves contain a mix of recent softcopy books and some older softcopy books. Most old softcopy books containing cross-book links are not updated to point to more recent editions of the books they link to. As a result, the links work only for the specific back-level editions that the links point to. When you open one of these old softcopy books from a bookshelf that does not contain the back-level editions the links point to, the links to these back-level books fail.
