Extensions: Virtualization Manager

Do more from a single point of management

Overview

IBM Virtualization Manager is an extension to IBM Director that allows you to discover, visualize, and manage both physical and virtual systems from a single console. Virtualization Manager simplifies management of VMware, Xen Microsoft® and POWER based Virtual Server environments. Virtualization Manager also integrates with and complements VMware VirtualCenter, linking together management for physical and virtual resources.

IBM Virtualization Manager 1.2. This release will feature expanded support for better visibility and management of resources on POWER¹ systems. In addition, new tools for image management and availability management have been delivered: IBM Systems Director Virtual Availability Management allows customers using Xen-based virtualization to create a high availability farm to help manage and respond to planned and unplanned outages as well as simplifying maintenance and migration tasks. Virtualization Manager also interoperates with VMware and Vmotion to create a high availability solution in the VMware environment. IBM Systems Director Virtual Image Management provides a single, unified view of all system templates and server images to help customers manage and deploy their systems. It allows customers to easily deploy new physical and virtual servers based on system templates and images. The templates can be used to create, customize and clone virtual and physical images on x86, AMD and POWER-based systems.

Virtualization Manager 1.2 became generally available on September 14, 2007.

Extensions: IBM Director and extensions for Linux on System z

¹Note that for i5 partitions users can create i5/OS virtual servers, monitor them, edit their virtual resources but there is no remote deployment capability.
