Tools in the news
The V5R4M0 version of the IBM Tools for Developers for i5/OS (formerly IBM eServer iSeries Tools for Developers) has been released. This new version updates some of the tools to newer releases and enables the product to be compatible with current and future i5/OS releases. Additionally, the performance of the VNC tool is significantly improved.
The product ID (PID), which is 5799-PTL, remains the same as the previous release.

Click on the "Downloads" link in the left column. At the top of the page, click on the "No-charge products, tools, and toolkits". For the "Types of no-charge software" check the box for "No-charge products (NCP)" and for the "Operating System" selection box, choose "i5/OS V5 OS/400 V5" and then press the "Search" button. "iSeries Tools for Developers" will be one of the products listed in the search results.

Overview
IBM Tools for Developers for i5/OS is a PRPQ product that contains various tools that will aid in the development, building, and porting of i5/OS applications.This product is designed to improve and enhance the development environment of the i5/OS by providing a wide array of tools to aid in development, building, and porting of i5/OS applications. New, existing, and enhanced tools are included that enable a developer to take advantage of i5/OS development capabilities.
The Tools for Developers for i5/OS package makes it possible to:
- Improve the i5/OS development environment
- Increase the i5/OS application developer's productivity
A wide variety of tools is provided to aid in tasks, such as:
- Editing
- Managing files
- Building applications
The tools come from a variety of sources. Some tools may be familiar to developers, because they were ported from other platforms, while other tools are newer and are specific to i5/OS.This product takes advantage of the different environments found on the i5/OS, such as the command line, Qshell, and the i5/OS Portable Application Solutions Environment (i5/OS PASE). Developers who are accustomed to working in a certain environment can remain in that environment with some tools, as well as take advantage of the tools and features from the other environments.

Terms and conditions
IBM lists the Tools for Developers for i5/OS as a Product Request for Pricing Quote (PRPQ) instead of a Licensed Program Product (LPP). As such, the product will not be translated and will remain English only. Due to the limited testing of PRPQ's, most programs contained in the product are provided "as is." Further information is provided in the license documents accompanying the product.
Licensing: Portions of this program are licensed under the terms of the International License Agreement (ILA) for Non-warranted Programs (Z125-5589).. Other portions of this program are licensed under various public licenses.
Program support: Program service will be available until December 31, 2009. Support will be limited to installation, configuration, and i5/OS related issues. Limited support will be provided for specific tools. The tools contained in the package will be updated, as necessary, to provide current versions.
National Language Version: This PRPQ will install and run correctly on any national language version, but all user interfaces are provided in the English language only.
