Other operating environments

IBM has brought many new and business-critical technologies to the marketplace for many years.
Many of these technologies have been tied into its hardware and operating system products. In fact, the IBM iSeries, pSeries, xSeries and xSeries servers and their respective operating systems have been instrumental in facilitating the
promotion of a new critical technology -- Linux.
IBM is a recognized leader in the Linux arena with recognition from the IT consultants and press
and awards like the iSeries "Best of Show" at LinuxWorld in 2001. Part of this new leadership is
related to how IBM
has been able to add Linux to an already successful portfolio of products.
For ISVs who are bringing new applications to IBM servers, there are choices of which environment they
should be using for most effective delivery of new solutions. Linux certainly is one. The other
IBM operating environments, such as AIX, OS/400, and OS/390 also provide unique capabilities that are particularly suited for some types
of applications. These environments, in supporting capabilities like logical partitioning, also can provide
powerful, server-wide advantages to all applications running on the server footprint, irrespective of the
technology they use for their operating environments. The traditional IBM operating environment functions
can help integrate individual solution parts so that the total solution offers greater customer advantage
than the parts individually.
For all of the eServer series, you will see Linux and one or more other environments listed for the server
pages. These lists demonstrate the flexibility and potential cost savings available with IBM servers when consolidating
a number of application parts onto one footprint for the customer to manage.
