Porting Central

Reference library

To deploy a new solution on the IBM System i5 family, you need to have a basic understanding of the system's architecture and operating system. Subsequent to reviewing the System i5 fundamental references, for nuts-and-bolts details see the Application development and porting references.

The outline and organization of these topics is based on years (decades) of experience helping ISVs who are new to the System i5 family to deploy solutions. The intent is to provide you with the information you need to be productive as quickly as possible. The expectation is that you are a skilled IT professional, experienced with one or more operating systems, but have never worked with the System i5 family and i5/OS operating system. Correspondingly, many of the presentations and lab exercises have been designed to draw upon your experience, particularly with UNIX variants and Windows operating systems.

If you would like to review the material in a manner similar to an online course, it is suggested that you read the presentations and references and complete the lab exercises in the order in which they are presented. You can anticipate spending ½ hour to 1 ½ hours per topic. It will take approximately 25-30 hours to review all the topics. Of course you need not review every topic. You may simply use the material for reference, reviewing only topics of specific interest.
