The IBM e-server zSeries and IBM S/390® Cryptographic Coprocessors.
The protection required to conduct commerce on the Internet and provide data confidentiality Wafercan be provided only by cryptographic services and techniques. IBM e-server zSeries and IBM S/390 servers support integrated hardware cryptographic coprocessors which provide levels of security and performance for some cryptographic operations that are not possible using software encryption techniques. There are two types of cryptographic coprocessors available:
  • CMOS Cryptographic Coprocessor is standard on IBM e-server zSeries 900 servers as well on IBM S/390 G4 and later models. It is also available as an optional feature on Multiprise models.
  • PCI Cryptographic Coprocessor is an optional feature of zSeries 900 servers and on S/390 G5 and G6 servers. It provides for expanded levels of throughput, and it provides a base for custom cryptographic function deployment.
Under z/OS (and OS/390) control, these two cryptographic facilities work in conjunction with each other to provide high levels of throughput and function. Particularly important is the acceleration and offload of SSL (SecureSockets Layer) transaction processing.

Security Features
  • Provides high-speed, highly secure, fault-tolerant cryptographic services
  • Awarded NIST FIPS 140-1 overall Level 4 Certification - the highest achievable
FIPS
  • Offers cryptographic services such as DES, Triple DES, CDMF, MAC'ing, PIN Processing, SHA-1, hardware pseudo random number generator, and Key Management concurrent with asynchronous cryptographic functions such as 1024-bit RSA, and Digital Signature Standard with secure remote master key entry, export configurable hardware, and battery backed nonvolatile memory storage.
Business Benefits
  • Provides a higher level of throughput and transaction security that can't be achieved by software alone.
  • The IBM e-server zSeries and IBM S/390 Cryptographic Coprocessors are supported by ICSF, Integrated Cryptographic Service Facility found standard with z/OS and OS/390 V2.
