Turn small change at the POS into big change for your community
Big changes are happening in communities across the country, inspired by shoppers who say “keep the change.” The simple gesture was inspired by the “RoundUp for Orphans” campaign from the Retail Orphan Initiative that provides funds for orphan care (food, shelter, clothing), adoption, mentoring, and child rescue from human trafficking. By collecting just a dime, quarter, or dollar at the point-of-sale (POS) retailers can provide money needed to benefit children, education and other causes in the community or worldwide. And it can add up fast.
Your POS may already support the RoundUp feature
Auto RoundUp is a feature of the IBM SurePOS ACE solution that enables retailers to “round-up” a transaction total at the POS to the next whole dollar, or beyond. By defining the desired characteristics of the roundup item(s) in the store’s database, the value of the item(s) can be accumulated and designated for the charity.
How it works
In accounting, a separate SKU number is set up to track amounts donated by customers. Each week a query is run to gather the amount “sold” on the SKU. The amount is removed from sales and recorded as a liability on the general ledger. When the round-up period ends, a check is made out to the local cause.
Typically 5-10% of transactions involve a donation
Because of the sheer volume of transactions, the funds donated to your local charity can make a big difference in your community. Especially today, when every dollar is crucial.
Your company can join “RoundUp for Orphans” with their ongoing work with orphaned or vulnerable children in the US and globally by contacting Retail Orphan’s Initiative (RetailROI). RetailROI can also help customize a program specifically for you.
